Yeah, these don't seem worse than standard WizKids paint jobs to me. You're usually going to be seeing them from a distance on a table, not examining them under a magnifying glass, so the quality is generally good enough for me.

In my experience the threat of death in 5E depends on if there is a healer (especially a cleric) to get someone back up when dying. My only TPK in running 5E so far happened on a session the Cleric player couldn't make, and the closest I came to a TPK otherwise happened when the healer was down...

Part of me is hoping the paucity of lore for aarakocra, azers, and bullywugs in the Monster Manual means it will be filled in by introducing them all as PC species for the revised edition. None of them seem like that much of a stretch for PC species.

Volo's and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes got most of its lore heavily errata'd and discontinued for sale, though. Part of the disappointment with the reduced amount of lore comes from it being removed and replaced with nothing.
