    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

Magic and Fantasy are not the same thing.

D&D 5E How would YOU nerf the wizard? +

I'm probably the biggest hater of the class on these boards and even I don't want to just plain render them unplayable. There's no sport in it.

D&D 5E How would YOU nerf the wizard? +

Step 1: Casting draws and AoO. Step 2: Find a class identity that's worth something instead of 'has big spell list. Step 3: Whittle down the spell list, have subclasses grant expanded spell list. Step 4: Have actual subclasses instead of legacy school specializations with a focused theme for...

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

Only because people wont' let other things be interesting or powerful without labeling it magic as per the premise of this thread.

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

Still wondering what we're paying for when we're getting rulebooks without the rules we actually need. Why not give out index cards that say 'ask your DM'?

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

Because we know which classes matter and which are okay to be sacrificed to lipservice to simplicity and old school play.

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Meaningful choices aren't simple. Simple good. Therefore we should have just one class... The Wizard. Because it's the only class that's apparently untouchable.

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

You realize that the game has changed fundamentally 5-27 times, at least four of which were in that 30 years, right? And that we're speaking specifically about the current iteration, which has only existed for a third of your time with the brand name?

What's keeping feats from doing this?

D&D General Getting The Gold Out of the Dungeon

Self-described 'pain in the butt' is honestly worse than boring like +x blandness. If the DM tells me taking a thing is going to be busy work, I'm just not going to take the thing.

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

Oh, cool. So what sort of stunts does that allow md-jump? How 'unusually long' as that jump going to be and what's the Dc for it? Ask you DM? Oh, so not empowered on the player side at all and not consistent across tables like I've been talking about this whole time? Yeah. So I don't think...

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

And the Jump ability check strictly limits how far and high one can jump. Hence the problem I have with it.

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

This is... somehow even less compelling than a plain +x weapon. Bottom line, I want to be able to do things. As in the same way a wizard can do things by casting fly or spider climb, or charm person. More numbers aren't all that important to me, especially since bounded accuracy means the dice...

D&D General Getting The Gold Out of the Dungeon

Teaching players not to expect loot and to steal from random NPCs and field strip corpses to scrape gold together for their needs.

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

See, I want the rules to actually support me and provide a consistent experience and I would never say that the fact that I can ignore the rules means the rules support that.

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

I'm pretty sure of a dog or particularly large branch can do it with no prep, I normal human man can. This is the other problem with the 'anything powerful must be magical' mindset: D&D tends to ignore how real life actually works when working out a baseline and somehow calls that verisimilitude.
  17. Vaalingrade

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

Because the combat abstraction is terribly boring and by design offers very little narrative control?
  18. Vaalingrade

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

And removing them from actually doing anything, thus handing all that narrative control back to the wizard where apparently the designers and fanbase want it!

D&D General Getting The Gold Out of the Dungeon

Then the question is whether you're going to keep them from doing just that, because in my experience, most players treat logistics puzzles as a Gordian Knot; cutting through it as quickly and efficiently as possible to get past it.
