The official EN World puppy/doggo thread

My late, great Scruffy: @payn, my condolences. I was a mess after Scruffy passed away (he had congestive heart failure and we eventually euthanized him because he was suffering). My old girl, Daisy, when she was a bit younger: And the ever-ridiculous Peanut:

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

My biggest gripe with 5E (which I like, please don't get me wrong) is that the power-curve for PCs is ramped up, adding extra complexity to the game. At the same time, those gains are offset by the fact that the power-curves for NPCs and monsters are also steeper... making the game feel...

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

I just wrapped up a 5E campaign and, in spite of the rules, had a fun time with it and think my players did too. In the future, I'd use my own Frankenstein rules (a mish-mosh of AD&D, Castles & Crusades, and 5E) as my go-to system.

I backed the JG Kickstarter and got nothing, except for grief, for my money.

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

From one D&D-playing Chris Perkins (who's also retiring this year) to another, I wish him all of the best in his future endeavors! He was an awesome ambassador of the game during his time at WotC.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Hi, I've been playing D&D since 1981 and have a nostalgic love for BX and AD&D but would never play them again. In order to "update" them, I came up with my AD&D3e rules and a d20 take on BX (with some advanced options tacked on in the appendices). The rules are a mix of 3e, Castles &...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Never tried it. I'm from NYC, so it's considered to be sacrilegious to do so. Still, I can imagine it working with prosciutto, shaved parmesan cheese, arugula on a pizza that's drizzled with balsamic reduction (if the pineapple is grilled beforehand). I can't see if working with a typical...

D&D General Playing OD&D (1974) in the Year of the Dragon (2024)

DOPPLEGANGERS: These are creatures with mutable form, able to shape themselves into the double of any person that they can observe. Dopplegangers are subject to neither Sleep nor Charm spells. They are also magic-resistant, saving against all forms of magical attack as if they were 10th level...

D&D General Playing OD&D (1974) in the Year of the Dragon (2024)

That's a tall order for OD&D. Maybe something like: 9th level doppleganger wizard. Level adjusted due to doppleganger abilities. 9th level hairy hill giant druid. Level adjusted due to giant abilities. 13th level human fighter with two 6-shooters, like Murlynd in Gary's Greyhawk game. 13th...

    Rules-Lite VS "Crunchy" TTRPG Systems

Barbarians of Lemuria is a good, rules-lite game. Everywhen is a generic, multi-genre take on BoL.

    D&D 5E (2014) Houseruling Long Rests

I like the idea the Hit Dice pools as a being form of "resource management" that extends the adventuring day and makes the party less reliant on having a dedicated healer. Long rests would replenish the Hit Dice pool completely (rather than only 1/2 of the expended Hit Dice). I'm sure the end...

    D&D 5E (2014) Houseruling Long Rests

It would depend on the circumstances but I'm guessing 2 to 3 short rests per day, so long as there is a safe area to do so.

    D&D 5E (2014) Houseruling Long Rests

The actual rules for Long Rests are actually more restrictive than my houserules. According to the rules, an hour of strenuous activity during a Long Rest requires characters to restart the Long Rest from the beginning. In my houserules, characters can simply make up that hour of interrupted...

    D&D 5E (2014) Houseruling Long Rests

It makes Short Rests much more important, allowing for non-magical healing and the recovery of exhaustion. At the same time, Long Rests simply reset the Hit Dice pool that players spent during Short Rests and reduce exhaustion better than they did before. The change also allows for...
