    new campaign new problems

If you're worried about combat speed, I would avoid creatures that heal or regenerate as much as possible. (Or, if you have them, put them in encounters with few other monsters.) Since your group will have a significantly lower damage output than you are used to, you don't want to exacerbate...

    Hybrid Rules and DDI subscription

In a somewhat related question, do the DDI hybrid rules include the Hybrid options for the Assassin class? One of my players is thinking of trying out a hybrid rogue/assassin, and if so I think it would be worth it to pick up a subscription.

Battles taking too long - whats the tricks?

edit: Ugh, can't get paragraphs to work for some reason. I will try this again later.

    Bless Weapon and Vulnerability

Bless Weapon (Paladin Utility 2 from Divine Power) among other things increases the crit range of the Weapon to 18-20 against creatures that are vulnerable to radiant damage. Does this bonus apply when a creature is vulnerable to *all* damage, such as creatures under the effect of Exacting...

    Defenders that actually defend

Edit @ KarinsDad I dont think it would be metagaming if you play it right... I had a fight where a group of lower level monsters all decided to rush the big shiny scary-looking human right out of the gate. After a couple rounds of being wholly ineffective against this metal-clad behemoth...

    Defenders that actually defend

As a DM, I find that defenders who are used well can be a great asset. They certainly can't be expected to control everything, but they can certainly find ways to severely punish some of the creatures that choose to ignore them. Strangely enough, I find that the Fighter ability Rain of Steel...

    Druid Summon powers question

Makes sense to me. Thanks for the help! =)

    Druid Summon powers question

Thanks, that was my original thought as well. The instinctive actions (in which the summon moves or attacks without taking the actions of the Summoner) is what threw me off in the case of Druids.

    Druid Summon powers question

I'm probably missing something in one of the books that would answer this question, but here goes: Is there anything preventing a Druid who has multiple Summoning powers from using them all in a single encounter, thus having multiple summoned creatures active and attacking instinctively at...

    Legendary Boon level check

Thanks =D That is a very good point about Fighter types, and one that I'll need to consider. I was thinking about the regeneration issue, and the one problem I have with having the effect end when the character is no longer bloodied is that the party in question is pretty prudent about healing...

    Legendary Boon level check

I'm creating a Legendary Boon (per the DMG 2) to hand out at the end of one of my adventures, and was hoping to get an opinion as to what level this should be: Property: You gain resist 1 to all damage. Property: You gain a +1 bonus to Fortitude defense. Power: (Daily) Minor action. Effect: You...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

I agree with much of the sentiment that disarm is a bit too wonky to allow for my tastes, but if you do go with making it into a power I would do this: Require a feat to learn the move, and make "Requires combat advantage" as part of the power. That way at least the player would have to make...

Rat Swarm Ongoing Damage vs. Fey Step

To further muddy the waters however, I would probably bend the rules a bit to allow a player in that situation a one-time-only immediate saving throw while using Fey Step in this way just for having a good idea. I would make it clear that it would be one time only, however, so that it would not...

Rat Swarm Ongoing Damage vs. Fey Step

I believe that your description of how the ongoing damage works is perfectly fine. You could alternately say that the damage is caused by a large number of bleeding bite marks left by the swarms attacks, by festering illness-ridden wounds, or a number of other options. This is an unfortunate...

    Is this how marking works?

Another distinction to make here (that helped me out a LOT as a DM) is that the fighter can *not* stop an enemy from shifting. The fighter power that allows the PC to stop enemy movement only applies to the fighter's opportunity attacks. Since the class feature that lets the fighter attack a...

Free RPG day Ebberon Black Ooze escape

Is its "engulf" (or whatever it may be called) attack listed as a grab? That would give us much more to go on. I do agree with Keterys however in that I also would not find it too out of line for a DM to rule that pushing a GC wouldn't automatically free its engulfed target.

Free RPG day Ebberon Black Ooze escape

The bottom line is, no one can really make a fair judgment on the DM's call without a stat block. For all we know, the creature could be statted like a Feymire Crocodile or other creatures that swallow a target (and dont allow any option for escape other than killing the creature in question.)

Argh, how i've missed that all this time I don't know. Thanks for the help!!

    Monster Basic Attacks

This is probably a fairly newbish question, but it's something that has come up a couple of times at my table and I want to make sure that my ruling is correct (or correct enough.) What exactly constitutes a monster (namely, creature that does not wield a weapon of any kind) basic attack? My...
