D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

I have another question if y'all don't mind. B-) There was a little discussion up thread about downtime. Now I get that in a true no-myth game (as I understand it), there is basically no such thing as downtime; it's all uptime, regardless if the action is "back in town" or not. If it's...

Pathfinder 1E Yet another Pathfinder With Firearms thread

Agreed. Pathfinder divides firearms into two categories with slightly different rules. In general, muzzle-loading guns are early, and chamber-loading guns are advanced... My personal hangup here is the attack vs. touch AC (which puts me in plenty good company).

Pathfinder 1E Yet another Pathfinder With Firearms thread

The declining firearm rarity description is simply flavor to support the mechanical and economic choices made. I thought it was interesting that the Paizo-provided rarity descriptions only went in one direction. I don't think emerging guns equals declining guns, just with different color text...

Pathfinder 1E Yet another Pathfinder With Firearms thread

Aha, a blast from the past! There is a 4.0 version of Grim-n-Gritty from 2005 that is still available, but it doesn't include the actual firearm design system contained in the document you're referring to. Interesting, thanks!

Pathfinder 1E Yet another Pathfinder With Firearms thread

As an example of cheap-but-not-dominating firearms in a fantasy setting, I'm looking at running a Ptolus campaign using Pathfinder with some house rules. One of the first things I've done is create a new rarity category (this is addressing the d20PFSRD firearms rules): Declining Guns: Firearms...

D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

I bet Zon-Kuthon knows how to extract Kazovon's chocolate from Ileosa's peanut butter. /snicker

D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

Thanks very much for your time Pemerton. They have their moments of brilliance, and tons of nifty reusable content and assets (very nice maps, etc). But run as written they strongly trend to relentless railroad beat-downs (IMO). I compare vanilla AP campaigns to the original Pirates of the...

D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

This is a bit of a derail, but I'll take another bite and attempt to re-track. The fundamental problem of all APs is they are too long for a single story arc. Even Kingmaker is only really sandboxy for the first 3 or 4 books, and even then each book is a silo'd sandbox (not that it would be...

D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

S'mon, there is a treasure-trove of shared GM wisdom for each AP on Paizo's forums, particularly CotCT. You would not be the first to attempt that kind of surgery. I'm sure you knew that already! :) One advantage of Paizo's APs is, despite whatever flaws they have, there is a very active...

D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

No worries, I'm not advancing any one-wayism. My preferred approach is focused on achieving outcomes and bringing the largest tool box I can carry to the table to create those outcomes. So regarding immersion through simulation (which is only just one flavor of immersion), process is only one...

D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene Framing and 4e DMing Restarted

So glad to see this topic continue to survive. /congrats A few questions I've been saving... Regarding scene-framing and protaganism: there's an old adventure design hack where some predetermined encounter (or scene) occurs because the PCs cross some (usually narrative) state threshold, and...

    Monte Cook's New Website

The provided link unnecessarily routes through Facebook, Guvnor. :heh: Much simpler to link directly to http://www.montecook.com. ;)

Did the internet change your mind?

I think what Monte is talking about here makes a lot of sense in a controlled, limited playtest. I can see how contamination could skew the results. However, I also think you can counter this in an open playtest by going big. Get the largest sample sizes you can muster, and the larger...

The classes you would actually want to play poll

I agree that anything within spitting distance of 50% (and the warlock is definitely in this range) would make a fine class list. I'd really like to see the barbarian split into a Background (Barbarian) and a Theme (Berzerker).

The classes you would actually want to play poll

It's pretty off-topic, but since you asked... There's two usual approaches to this: Swordy as a Chessmaster--always thinking several moves ahead of the opponent; see the Robert Downey, Jr. Sherlock Holmes vehicles. Swordy as a Jedi Nerd--instead of hitting with WIS ('use the force'), hits...

    D&D 5E Our 5 Session Playtest

Yeah, the problem is auto-hit + at-will. The idea of prepping cantrips in a spell slot is interesting. It might be more complex/confusing than they want for the rules kernel, but this allows you to have magic missile both ways. 0-level spells would include an extra entry/paragraph describing...

D&D 5E When will we be able to run a campaign with D&D Next?

I believe Mike said they wanted the chargen and adventure guidelines out for testing by the end of the summer. At a guess, I would look for August/September time frame. That assumes nothing from the previous packets blows up in their faces, first.

The Ogre Killed the Dwarf in 3 Rounds

Right. A party of 1st-level PCs choose to stand and fight an Ogre. The healer completely fails to fulfill that role. The party as a whole fails to kill the Ogre in 5 rounds. Two PC deaths occur; one of them is a Wizard. This is an axiomatic result. Next is authentically D&D, Q.E.D. B-)
