D&D General Do you play in person or online?

Both. I play with 1 live group and several online ones. The live group meets less frequently but we have longer play sessions. It’s also is my longest running group.

    Spoilers Severance (Apple TV)

I found the pacing was kind of odd in the early first season and it took me a while to warm to it. I also think Season 2 was big improvement over the 1st Season.

Is this still ongoing? It looks like someone replied to a year old post.

D&D 5E Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

Curse of Strahd will probably go down as “the classic” 5e module. I’d also name Witchlight as a classic, but it’s one that’s certainly not for everyone. You have to really enjoy the Feywild and Wonderland elements. Honorable mention goes to Radiant Citadel. I like the anthology style of...

D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

Yeah, even my teenage self found the boob armor to be ridiculous. It was nice to see your strategy for the Bit o Moander (sweet and delicious with just a touch of corruption!). This always felt like the most difficult battle in the game to me. I always hoarded Hold Monster scrolls and spells...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

My latest purchases were Dragonbane Core Set, the accompanying Bestiary, Fabula Ultima, and Icons super hero rpg. Trying some new things! 😁

Epic/High fantasy game for a one-shot introductory game

I like Dragonbane and I think it could work, but it can be very lethal and requires a certain tactical mind to survive dangerous combats. Players will need to know when to use their action to defend vs attack, for instance. If I were going to use Dragonbane for beginners I would probably beef...

Epic/High fantasy game for a one-shot introductory game

Another recommendation for Fabula Ultima. If they’re brand new to rpgs, you might consider trimming out some of the mechanics concerning bonds, particularly for a 1-shot (depends on how comfortable they are with rp’ing). Savage Worlds could work, but I’ve found the system is a little hard for...

    How often do you play?

I have 3 online groups that I play or GM with that typically meet bi-weekly for 2-hour sessions but typically I’m playing at least one of those per week. Then I have a long running live group that meets about every month-and-a-half for marathon 6-8 hour games.

So, what was the deal with Zelazny's second Amber series sucking so badly?

I think my biggest disappointment with the second Amber series was that it left me wanting more, and sadly we would not get that.

    Dragonbane general thread

I’ll be running my first Dragonbane session here soon! A couple of gear questions I have for veteran players: Is there a discernible difference between large and small shields, other than the durability rating? I couldn’t seem to find any explanation in the rules. And with music instruments...

    Underrated RPGs

Right… and we used Method 2 for the few games we played. I think I just wanted “point buy” and even tried to hack one in but decided it wasn’t worth it.

    Underrated RPGs

Yeah it’s unfortunate that a cool game with a lot of potential was practically dead on arrival. And to further elaborate on the character creation… I thought it was fine for helping a new player make a character for the first time, particularly if you had no preconceived notions. But a lot of...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

The bigger numbers tend to be slower for players to Math out, as Tigris above me mentioned. Aesthetically I don’t like when the bonuses start to near or exceed the size of the die I’m rolling (ie, a d20). The range to hit might be the same but in some way it “feels wrong.” In my home brew...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

I backed the original 13th Kickstarter hoping it would be the successor to 4e, but I ultimately gave it a pass because it had 3 bit flaws for me: The flexible attacks and “dumbing down” of martial classes The massive hit point and damage inflation as you leveled. I didn’t like such extreme...

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

I’m not familiar with those supplements, but they do look interesting! I’m not sure how you currently determine creature weight for other game systems, but most of the Shadowdark creatures have direct D&D analogs, so if you’ve already got weight classifications for them that might be a start.

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

I’ve found that this varies greatly from player to player, however I think most don’t necessarily want to feel overpowered. However, what most don’t want to feel is weak or ineffective; they want to be competent at the role they’ve chosen.
