To the best of my knowledge there isn't currently a way to get Maps to add a grid to a map that doesn't already have one. The Red Dragon Lair map comes with a grid, but it consists of thin grey lines that vanish when the map is shrunk to the size shown in that first post. I didn't add a grid...

Maps is still somewhat bare bones, relative to other VTTs. However, they have added a lot of additional functionality over the last year, and as a regular user I feel very optimistic about how they've done that. Far too many pieces of software that I've enjoyed using have become less fun to use...

Maps really is easy to use though. But that does assume that you are already using D&D Beyond for a campaign and characters. I just tested setting up a map for an existing campaign and characters using one of the default basic maps and it took under 20 clicks to have the whole thing up and running.
