1" = 5' Scale Maps for sale?

Dr. Niles Crane

First Post
Does anyone offer larger maps (say, poster board size or larger) with a 1" = 5' scale that are usable with counters and minatures? I'm not looking for small maps, generic battle mats, or graph paper (have all those), but premade maps of towns, dungeons, etc. that I can cover my gaming table with and use for tactical combat.

I make my own on large graph paper, but it's sometimes a pain (and always time consuming, using colored pencils and markers). I would definitely be willing to shell out the $$$ for some decent larger maps, like the freebies that Dungeon/Dragon sometimes include but that cover more table space.

If anyone has heard of a company selling these, please let me know!

To the best of my knowledge their is no one with a product like this due to the inability to easily produce it at a price people would be willing to pay for.

Now if you have access to some kind of large format printer, thats a different story. :-)

That's pretty much what I've seen as well, even at Gen Con. The ones WotC has in Dungeon/Dragon are of good quality, but a little on the small side (not complaining, just looking for something like that but with more space for the players and bad guys to rumble when the time comes). I figured something even B/W wouldn't be that expensive, but who knows. :)

Well, how much were you willing to pay & what kinda stuff are you looking for?

One thing you can do is take a good copy of a smaller map and run it through an oversize copier at you local copy shop. (kinko's, etc...) and get a poster size version in B/W for around 10 bucks I belive. (prices may have gone up since I did this)

The only hard part is making sure you know how large a paper they can print on to and what % of enlargement the machine will do. Then just work backwards to a good size to create in. :-)

Or I can talk to a friend and see what we may be able to do for you. :-)

Good idea: I've actually done that with a few suppliments with maps that have worked well for individual buildings, but I was hoping some enterprising d20 publisher had gotten the idea of the larger tactical maps and was out there selling them. I would think that someone with a D or E size plotter and decent map making skills could create a few (town, forest, swamp, caverns, etc.) and just print them on demand, sell them for $10 or $15 each (more for color, plus a couple bucks for lamenation and shipping), and make a pretty decent profit with very low investment (aside from the plotter). I keep mentioning it to gamers and they usually say, "Great idea: you should do that!" Of course, the reason I'm not is I don't like to and often don't have the time to map to begin with.

Its been a while, but didn't the 1e Forgotten Realms accessory, "City of Mystery" have such maps?

It also included a TON of paper cut outs (which was what the product was sold for) but I think it had town maps that you would lay out, and then put your cut out houses on top of...

Could be wrong... Good luck.

PatEllis15 is right, the old Cities of Mystery did have 1inch grid maps to go with the fold up buildings. The "Falcon" series of Greyhawk modules (1rst or 2nd Edition, I forget which) also had that style of map with their cardboard buildings. I think you can get these products electronically as ESD's if you don't mind printing them out yourself. Or you can try to find them used, and hope that things are still intact.

Also, Steve Jackson Games was making some maps available with a 1 inch grid. The one I've seen was a "haunted house" style, with multiple maps depicting the various floors (and some outbuildings) of a large mansion. In this series, I believe they also did a secret underground laboratory, a shopping mall, and a bunch of Traveller starships. Hopefully, they'll keep up that line for some more fantasy maps.
