d'oh, yeah under 1-HD is also fine. wouldn't want to deprive people of playing kobolds.

Kobolds are 1 HD, no con bonus so average out at 4 hp.

pixie, nixie, brownie, grig, sprite, kobold, orc, goblin... hobgoblins were 1+1 HD in earlier editions but i'll include them here too, gnome, dwarf, elf, halfling, nilbog, dervish, nomad, bandit, buccaneer, pirate, half-elf, half-orc

i'd be willing to give a shot at the fey and evil humanoids you mentioned. "1+whatever" is really just 1-HD with extra hp, so anything that had that is a-OK of course.

i'll have to say "no" on "dervish, nomad, bandit, buccaneer, pirate" as those were humans anyway, and gnome, dwarf, elf, halfling, half-elf and half-orc are already in the PHB. no undead or animals as PCs for me.

nilbog? as a PC? as a DM, i'd rather allow a flumph.

i'm going to have to not use things from d20 books, because the writer guidelines pretty specifically state that Dragon won't be taking things from d20 sources.

as to the variant PC races... yeah, maybe. energy drained, heh...

I am not sure about HD off the top of my head, but allow me to vote my total support of the article concept!! I already love your creature conversions, and honestly, every race article I read in Dragon makes me think of a new character I would like to play with it..!

thanks! i think Dragon uses their own artists for the articles, but i can submit any drawings that someone does to give them an artistic reference.

i don't know about the tortle, but IIRC the rakasta have 3-HD. not that i couldn't just make them a bit weaker...

In 1e Xvarts were weaker than Kobolds, so in 3e maybe 1 HD with a con penalty? And remember, in Greyhawk they have their own god (at least I think they do).

I didn't realize you were going to write it for Dragon, I thought you were just going to use that as a model to do it and post it yourself somewhere.

If you did an eberron or MMIII monster race that might be more topically attractive to them right now, but since I don't own either I couldn't suggest any.

Given that grippli and (next month) lupins have been featured in the “Winning Races” column of Dragon, I was thinking of writing up such a column using already existing D&D monster races, and wondering what else is out there.

i think the problem was that i said "writing up such a column" instead of "writing up such an article for the column" like i meant.

my good friend Shade would like to add the giff from Spelljammer, and the Phanaton from mystara. also the urd (aka flying kobolds); though they have 2-HD it wouldn't kill them to knock 'em down to 1.
