Hmm. Isn`t this explicitely stated in the text? Or do they only tell something about encumbrance, speed, check penalty and spell failure?

We always played it as being actual light armor.
(A note here: The Arcana Unearthed counterparts of mithral armor, devenian armor, does not seem to change the type of the armor. But I doubt this gives any clear indication how it is meant to work in D&D3.5)

Is a mithral breastplate considered light armor as far was the feat armor proficienty (light)?

mithrial breastplate is light armor.

this has more to do with range of motion while wearing it.

so yes you should be able to use it with light armor prof.

thus why many rangers want to find it. ;)

Yep. Mithral Breastplate is light armor in all ways. This makes Mithral Full Plate really ausome for Barbarions... too.

I don't have my books with me and I do not have time to search the SRD, but I have a pretty strong recollection of a sage ruling in 3.0 that was incorporated into 3.5 regarding this issue. I thought the rule was that you treat mithril armor as if it were one category lighter for specified purposes, but in terms of proficiency from feats or class restrictions, the armor is treated as if it were its normal category of weight. So, mithril full plate 'feels' like medium armor, but it remains heavy armor for proficiency purposes and class limitations.

I'd wait until someone goes through the books before accepting any answer as final.
