10% xp penality

Ok just a question here.....

The game designers have said that they did not players dipping into every class to just gain the most powerful class features. They added a 10% penality to stop this from happening. Now they removed this feature from PrC advancement. So now we have people dipping into all the different PrC to gain even more powerful class features. Should there not be a XP penality to having more than one unfinished PrC ?

Usually not.

The game designers changed most classes from being too frontloaded, e.g. dipping for a few levels costs more and yields less. Same for most prestige classes (at least the good ones), the abilities get better the higher you get... e.g. level dipping is not worth it by itself.

I'd rather dismiss the multiclass XP penalty than introduce it for prclasses.

They actually didn't change it for Pr Cl.

It was that way in 3.0 but was mistakenly left out of the first printing of 3.5 and has since been restored to its original intent - that is no xp penalty for Pr Cl.

The thing about most PrC is that they have prerequisites. If you have to do 2 lists of things to be able to get into 2 different PrC, it tends to put a damper on "extreme" level dipping.

No. If you think a player dipping into too many PrCs is causing a problem, tell the player that you don't want him to.

It's workable, but you'll have to make a few changes. Just saying "PrCs count" means you'll take a hit instant when entering a PrC unless your favored class is part of your build or you're heavily multiclassed.

Perhaps a penalty for classes but your first PrC always counts as a favored class. PrCs with few levels in them are meant as mild dips, and should also be excluded.

Agreed. Someone who qualifies for 4-5 different PrCs doesn't usually have room left to take the feats that normally make his character class work well.

You mean except for the PrCs whose feat choices make the PrC work better?
