101 D&D Miniatures for Easter

So, to keep this on topic, how do you buy your miniatures? Do you buy the packs and trade, or just order online the ones you want?

I always find just the right miniature for very reasonable prices at this site. :D

Very cool gift for MojoGM - nice going Djeta!

I have to admit, I haven't looked at Ebay since I bought through the Dragoneye and Harbinger miniatures I was missing.

I'm lucky enough to own a LOT of the metal miniatures from years of gaming/painting, so only had some rares and perhaps some uncommons that I wanted to pick up from the first two sets.

I'll fully admit that its nice getting a pre-painted miniature to represent a D&D critter, and boy have my painting days started to dwindle since I've been buying these things online.

One of the first miniatures I bought on Ebay was a Mind Flayer. I paid $8 plus Shipping, and thought at the time I was sort of taken for a lot of money. Looking on there today for a Mind Flayer, I was given a great sense of relief when I noticed that Mind Flayers seem to regularly sell for around $15 to $20 or so.. I got away with a steal.

My jaw scraped asphalt when I saw the price of a Minotaur or Displacer beast.. Yee! $20+?? I'm very happy I bought when I did ;)

I'll admit though, I do hope more people start selling their extras online. Even the commons they might think won't sell. I purchased 10 Kuo-Toa for a steal, since I've never had figures to represent them before.

The Archfiends set had very little of what I wanted, so I'll likely be plunking a lot of the ones I got on there (Orcs, fighters, rangers, and a certain Drow I don't need).

Actually commons are what we mostly were looking for. Commons , IMO, tend to be the ones you want lots of, (things like kobolds, militia guys, orcs, etc.) and the more the better IMO. I never understood why people complained about having so many commons when they could probably easily trade them with someone for a few uncommons or a rare that someone else has no need for.

For example, we got about 4 "Drunken Masters" from the Dragoneye set when I got MojoGM the case of 16 booster packs. That's a lot of drunken masters and no one in any of our games runs, or plans on running a monk or a ninja or whatever he's supposed to be anytime, probably ever. We just aren't into those games. So we have no need for him. But say someone is running a game set in the far east who might need a bunch of "ninja" looking guys. I could see someone needing a ton of these but having no need for the same amount of Dalelands militia.

There's something for everyone.

I got turned on to them through this forum a few weeks ago. Now I haven't received my shipment yet, but my trader got his from me on Thursday. I expect mine in another day or two. Basically, you post your wants and haves, the site makes matches with others and it's up to you to decide on the terms of the trade. Unlike ebay, most people are willing to do a rare for a rare, etc.

I also have had good success on ebay. I've bought open boosters to complete my collection and get a few extras as well. These ran from $7.99 to $9.99, about what you'd pay in the store.

I'm also selling on ebay http://members.ebay.com/ws2/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=mytechdept, most boosters have gone for $7.99 but I'll admit to an umber hulk selling for $24. I immediately turn around and buy more rares myself. It pays to shop around and look for deals.

I only buy from the secondary market. I don't like to pay money for things I may not ever use, nor do I want to have to sell them on e-Bay and then ship them later.

While I love the miniatures, I don't like the blind purchasing. I'd be willing to pay a little more than retail if I could just select what I'm buying in the first place.

Well I started out by buying a couple of Harbinger starters. Then a couple of boosters. Then ten, and another ten, and more... Then I just bought the ones I didn't yet have from Popular Collections. For Dragoneye I just bought two cases and then another order of singles to fill in the gaps. Same for Archfiends.

Now that I've about tripled my 20-year collection of minis in few months I have sworn to stop - or at least slow down. I'll have to see what all Giants is going to contain before deciding if I want to maintain a complete collection. However I also have a list up on maxminis to see if I can trade away some of those multiple rares I have no need for to get some of the rares I want more of. My needs are strictly RPG/collector related, I haven't yet played the minis game and don't foresee doing so.

If you can buy a case, I think it's the way to go. Seems to get a better variety that way, not to mention how incredibly fun it is to know you still have 15 packs left to open after the first one ;)

We'll check out this site too.

Cases are certainly my favorite way of getting the figs I want. I like to have a full set, a ton of the common commons (orcs, goblins, etc), a solid number of uncommons and sometimes dupes of the rares (trolls, giants, giant spiders, etc). Buying 2 cases each of DE & AF I managed to get all the commons and uncommons I wanted (with small exceptions) and was only missing 3 rares from each set. Trading on maxminis rounded out my complete sets and I was able to pick up a few rare dupes that I wanted while getting rid of things that are no use to me (4 Drizzt, for example).

So, for both sets I paid just a bit more than $200 and got everything I wanted. :)
