101 Non-Adventuring Magic Items (and Spells)

Reynard

aka Ian Eller
Most of what appears in official WotC products relates directly to adventuring and combat. The reasons are obvious, and this thread isn't about discussing that. But just becausse the PCs are adventurers doesn't mean the rest of the world is. Presumably, wizards, clerics and others create items for use by experts in particular fields, the aristocracy and/or nobility, and even the common person.

This thread is for creating, in as much or as little detail s you desire, 101 items for use by non-adventuring folk in a D&D setting and, if necessary and desired, the spell(s) that are prereqs for creating such items.

1. Frosty Mug

Available at only the highest calibre inns and tavers, a frosty mug is enchanted to keep the contents -- usually ale -- chilled to the perfect temperature. The mugs are popular during long meetings, and especially with dwarves. (weak transmutation, CL 3rd, Prereq: CWI, chill metal, 600 gp*)

* I say divide all gp values by 10 for non-adventuring items.

While not created by me, there's an Eberron module where the PCs find an Unseen Servant washing clothes. It was supposed to be a special item. When destroyed, it's recreated a few rounds later. Definitely not for adventuring.

3. Little Throne -- a garderrobe seat that uses prestidigitation to not stink quite so much, and removes dirt from whatever is sitting on it. Requires prestidigitation; cost: 50 gp.

4. Ginsu Knife Rack -- a lodestone bar which attaches to your wall and reduces the wear & tear on your kitchen knives. Requires make whole and keen edge; cost: 100 gp.

in a game I once played the DM awarded us with Hortence the Singing Rock - it was a Rock and it sung and that was it.

I think prestidigitation could accomplish the same thing for a much lower price.

But not as nifty. Remember, the more you spend, the better the quality doncha know. ;)

Shiny Cloth
Appears to be a simple washrag, but when used, it instantly polishes metals to a bright sheen, woods to a glossy glow, etc. weak transmutation Prereq: Wizard 3rd prestidigitation Cost: 50gp

8. Halfling Pouch. A small travel pouch that refills with high-quality pipeweed every morning. The pipeweed spoils 24 hours after it has been removed from the pouch. (Use it or lose it)

9. Adjustable Belt. A plain leather belt. When worn, whatever clothes one is wearing expand or contract to fit appropriately. No more worries when you put on a few (or not so few) pounds.

10. Iron Hangers. Clothes hung on these hangers overnight are neatly pressed and ironed. No starch.

11. Backscratcher. On command, this wooden scratcher animates and scratches the user as commanded. Carved in the shape of a dragon's claw. "Aaahhhh..."

12. Pooper Scooper. This tiny shovel, upon command, will scoop up waste within 20' of the user. Such waste is magically transported to the plane of fire, where it (hopefully) is turned to ash. Denizens of that plane have been known to go into rage upon sighting one of these objects.

13. Merchants' Scales

This set of magical scales are enchanted so as to ensure fairness in trade. They come in many sizes, from small for trading in extremely valuable substances, to very large in trading in bulk items. When items or goods are placed on the scales, the magical nature of the scales detects without error the weight of and materials from which they are made and an ethereal voice speaks both (audible within 20 feet). The scales will not detect the quality of material, however.

14. Cinnamon Stick: When stirred into a container of water, the cinnamon stick turns the water into cinnamon-spiced hot cocoa. Works in holy water, as well, but it does not get quite as hot in this medium.
When not in use, the stick emits a cinnamon aroma, and will work as an effective room freshener if left out overnight.
