10ECL character for hack'n'slash module

brilliant. that sounds like much more fun. pixie is a great idea.
maybe it's worth to take a levels of assassin for poison use? or maybe there can be some more interesting class combination?

[6 HD +2 ECL] Minotaur fighter2

Max that STR, Take weapon focus, improved natural attack and improved crit horns so your gore and powerful charge damage goes up.

+3 large fullplate. 12,150
spend the rest on your golfbag of weapons for DR overcoming. Make yor main weapon the triping reach polearm. Trip your foe on your AoOs and since the AoO hapens while they were leaving the square, thier prone ass is ripe for your charge.

Either that or a Centaur fighter 4 using the so cheap they are broken horseshoes of speed.

+2? i thought minotaurs have +4LA? nice idea though. spirited charge, improved trip, knock-down, eh?
and centaur won't work. DM has already house-ruled that horseshoes work only with mounts. :)

I second the minotaur, but I'd make it a Bbn1/Ftr1. With maxed Str, that's a 30 when raging (34 with a Bull's Strength). You may not be good in other areas, but you will absolutely murder most things that stand in front of you.

ECL 10, no race or class restrictions (humanoids are prefered though) 20,000gp - starting money.
You are all starting out with barely above NPC wealth? What's up with that? :)

I recommend against the pixie. It's certainly interesting, for a short while, but then it's aggravating and one wrong move/monster and you're dead. I think the aasimar clr9 has the most staying power. The minotaur is also nice.

Eh. The minotaur will only let you have 2 class levels. Not that great. If you are going to go that route, you might as well go all out and be a half-dragon ogre (Str +18, -2 Dexterity, Con +6, Int -2, Cha -2) Fighter or Barbarian 1 with a 36 Strength, +9 natural armor bonus, and a 60' fly speed.

A wereboar might be interesting. (3 racial HD + 3 LA) The DR is definitely nice.

To the OP:

Don't try for some super-strong +LA character. They tend to end up as paper tigers. Like you mentioned in the first post, you want someone who can stay alive as well as kill stuff.

Basically, the most efficient way to achieve major ass-kicking in a hack-and-slash campaign is magic. Especially if you have the option to attack and retreat. (Buff, fight/blast, run away. Repeat as needed.) ) And for melee, shapechanging magic is king. At level 10, you usually want to be a cave troll (MM3). (Possibly unless you can use outsider forms.)

Wizards and sorcerers and can change form with polymorph or draconic polymorph(5th, Draconomicon). If the DM lets you use Skip Williams' item rules for wild shape, the master of Many Forms (CAdv) is pretty good. Even a cleric can get polymorph, with the Transformation domain in Races of Eberron. Psions have metamorphosis.

Feats like Carmendine Monk (Champions of Valor, for a monk/wizard) or Ascetic mage (CAdv, for a Monk/Sorcerer) lets you add you main casting stat to AC when unarmored. Another trick for a melee sorcerer is to get a level of Sacred Exorcist (CD) and get the Divine Might (CW) feat.

If you like the idea of a shapechanging melee char I could post a more complete character. (Depending on what you prefer - wizard, sorcerer, cleric, psion...?)

They're only paper tigers IF you have something with more than ELC +5. I do think Minotaur might not be the best choice. One suggestion you might like (if you enjoy dragons) is possibly using Noble Draconians, especially lighting dragons and using their racial class progression shown on here. http://www.dlnexus.com/fan/rules/12569.aspx

Use that and continue with paladin levels, you will certainly have great staying power.

Natural were-creatures are just broken at LA+3.
Pop Quiz: How many creatures in the MM can bypass DR 10/Silver as printed?

The two easy choices are Wererat Rogue 6 or Werewolf Barbarian 5.

Werebear Barbarian 1 is just sick. (+16 Str and +8 Con? Yes please)
