Update: June 25th, 2025

Books are with the printer; change-list coming; class-specific character sheets
The Heroes' Handbook, the Gamemaster's Guide, and the 13th Age Art Book are all with the printer. We're in the indefinite phase where the printer mentions technical details that mightnot cause a problem but that will definitely not cause a problem if we fix them, so files are going back and forth every day.

We haven't compiled the two books into a single big and fully cross-linked PDF yet, but when that's done we'll be sharing this actually-final version of the PDF. There were plenty of corrections from the earlier versions we sent to backers, so yes, you'll want the actual finals.

Two other things we're working on now seem worth mentioning: the change-log and the new character sheets.

I've been typing up a chapter-by-chapter summary of important changes from 1E. The first place we'll present the list is here, as another update. This change-log is probably not going to address all the shifts between the various playtest versions. On the other hand, if there are big playtest changes that got rolled entirely away but were not replaced with anything new, I'll try to address that. I bet ya'll will have comments on changes I miss.

For the class-specific character sheets, Miguel and I met for a couple hours today going over the plans for each class. I don't think we'll have them done in time to accompany the PDFs, but you'll see progress on this front soon.

With all these plans in progress, you'll hear from me with another update next week.

It's wonderful to hear the news. I am a huge fan of the game, and managed to play a session with Jonathan and Rob. Great people. And I just hope that the game doesn't get lost if the shuffle of all the big releases coming out this year. This is one project that I backed for the PDFs and the books to show support.

I've just started running 13A 1e for the 1st time in 4 years. I ran a 1-shot adventure (Wreck of Volund's Glory) for a group of my neighbors, of which only 1 had previous TTRPG experience. I'm running it in the Midgard World setting thanks to the terrific adaptation of the Midgard Bestiary and included Midgard Icons by Ash Law and Wade Rockett. I've previously run 4 campaigns in that setting with 4 different TTRPGs, so I figured it be easier for me to work Icons for a settings who's lore I'm highly familiar with. Not to mention I'm a big fan of the Midgard World setting.

I worried my players might not grasp Icons and backgrounds, but that hasn't been a problem. Although I did create a document for the PC backgrounds which lists the types of aptitudes/skills that a said background could do. That said, I was pleasantly surprised at how creative some of them have been when working their backgrounds.

I recreated a gridlesss tabletop map of the adventures main village, with a legend displaying "engaged", "nearby" and "far away" distances. I did that, because with most of my players having never played a TTRPG, I had concerns about them not grogging positioning for theater of the mind play. That approach worked and they were able to effectively play through later encounters TOTM. We're now adventuring in one of my homebrewed Midgard adventures. I'm also looking to adapt some of the many PF1e or D&D 5e Midgard adventures I own.

As prep, I read the core book front -to- back and back -to- front. I have to say, like the 1st time I read it I was impressed - definitely one of the best written CRBs I own. Love the little antidotes re. Rob and John and the sidebars throughout the book have been helpful towards GMing. To me 13A seems like a very perfected D&D 4e.

What I'm finding myself most compelled to get is a copy of the 1e 13 Ways (only own the PDF), as one of the pregenned PCs I gave my players was a Druid. I've found a store in my country that has a preowned bundle of the 1e CRB, 13 Ways and Bestiary for about $50 USD and I'm considering it. That said, I'm keen to read some feedback and reviews of 2e, with the idea of maybe migrating to it instead.

So yeah... a few months ago I'd have never had a moments thought about a purchase of 2e, but these recent, positive experiences with 1e are making me rethink.
