15' reach and attacks of Opportunity

If a PC is fighting a monster with a 15' reach, and he's in the middle 5' section, makes a side-step move to cast a spell on a person in combat.
Would he be subject to an AoO?
I'm thinking...
5' step, no
casting spell yes- but cast on the defensive
other than that, moving within that area (the middle-ring as it were), would that normally allow for an AoO?
Does this make sense? He's not moving closer or further away, just to the side, still in the threatened area though.

thanks!

The casting a spell would provoke the AoO. Moving 5' never provokes an attack of opportunity.

Moving 10' with the first one being a threatened area always produces an AoO. So, being in the middle and moving back 2 squares, or forward 2 squares, or moving sideways within the 'ring' 2 squares, or any combinations; would provoke an AoO.

Great, thanks!

Still, if casting on the defensive, that could negate the AoO?
Yep. Casting on the defensive never provokes an AoO. You just need to make the Concentration check in order to get the spell off.

Just thing of it as follows:

Leaving a threatened square will provoke an AoO for that move action (you won't get more than one AoO from the same enemy for the same move action). 5ft-steps don't provoke AoO's.

Just to be a little nitpicky, a 5' step never provokes an AOO. There are some situations in 3.5 with hampered movement where moving 5' does cause AOO.

The character must be in a threatened square when they take the action that provokes an attack of opportunity or there is not attack of opportunity.

Therefor this character does not provoke an attack of opportunity.
