That's a 2-square pole, thank you very much!

I lol'd. Seriously.

While it does seem a bit silly to be releasing the 'preview' adventure so close to the actual books for those that are going to be buying them on release day... For those who aren't, it doesn't matter. Really, I choose to think of it as a combination item; it's both the 'game intro box' with quick-start rules, pre-gen characters, and an adventure, and a full adventure for those who want to play long-term. The intro box I got for Alternity had a truly teensy adventure in it... but it came with a TSR-labeled bag of dice.(which I still use, albeit with more dice in it now)

I'll be getting KotS when it comes out for a number of reasons.

First, I'd like to see a 4e adventure to get a feel for how they go about adventure design in the new edition. It's the reason I read all the sample adventures in a book.

Whether or not I take that and run with it for my own adventures/campaigns is a different story entirely but it's nice to have a basis for comparison.

Second, I'd like a startup adventure to run. Something that helps walk me through some of the new rules. I learn better by doing -- although I learn pretty good by reading.

Third, it's more like a 3-week difference in time for me -- given Amazon's shipping. Sure, I'll probably pick up the PHB the day it's released -- I won't kid myself on that. But just because I have the PHB doesn't mean I'll be able to do anything with it (at first). Having KotS will give me a jumpstart on that, hopefully speeding up my learning curve.

In addition, I probably won't kickoff an "official" campaign until I've read at least the PHB and the DMG -- if not all three books.

KotS gives me something to do in the interim.

Why? Are you not allowed to finish Shadowfell once you have the core rulebooks?

Remember when, I think it was Disney, experimented with $3.00 DVDs that would literally break apart a few days after you exposed them to air? Same principle.

You haven't heard about that clause in the GSL?

You can either run adventures using the quick rules in H1, or the full rules in the PHB, but not both at the same time.

Unless the adventures are from different product lines, or companies, or something like that...
And let's not forget the clause that says that if you try to use homemade characters with KotS, your copy of the adventure will spontaneously combust. It's the pregens all the way or nothing at all (and don't think about altering the pregens either!) ;)

KotS is the trial version for WotC's new line. If it sucks, they'll lose a lot of sales.
Maybe, maybe not. "KotS is the trial version for WotC's new line," is way oversimplifying the situation.
