Ugh, point buy.

I understand the point of it, but much prefer dice rolling myself. If you're worried about characters not being buff enough, simply change the method a little- give 'em 30d6 to roll and let them assign any 3 to each stat; discard the rest.

I like the possibility of having a 3. Having played several characters with low stats for years (including one with a 3), I have to say, they really add character.

All that said, the 18-8 stat method seems like it would work, especially for a campaign with Heroic (capital-H) characters. I wouldn't like it myself, but I don't think it's especially broken or anything.

We don't use point buy, but the equivalent ends up being much higher than 38. It's not too hard to challenge us.

I give PCs 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12. I got sick of Players getting themselves killed thill they rolled an 18.

My group and I tried this method once not long after 3.0 came out. The game seemed as balanced as any other but ultimately we all preferred the 4D6-L method. My group has never cared for points buy and prefers the mix of characters that random rolls produces.
