D&D 1E 1E Addition to 5E I would Pay A Premium For

Here is something I would be prepared to pay a premium for.

Today the spine went in my PHB and some pages started to come out. Its early but you can see the crack.

This is on top of my MM falling apart but it is in even worse shape.

I have 3 copies of the 1E PHB one the 6th printing from 1980 and it is in near new condition and you do not get that crack sound when you open it.

The other 2 have the Easley cover but still going strong.

Early AD&D books were stitched because that is what Gygax wanted, later ones form the mid 80's used cheap binding (my OA book has pages falling out).

The only other book I have that is in a bad way s the 1995 PHB I have for 2E and that saw heavy use by teenagers who grabbed it by the open cover and dragged it, moved through several student flats in the late 90's and spent a decade buried in a basement and it is still usable though.

1E will outlast all the other D&Ds because in the event of a nuclear war the 1E PHB will survive or in the event of an asteroid strike or other extinction level event.

Do you really need to make a new thread for every complaint you have with 5E? I mean seriously every time I open up a thread that is a complaint about 5E I think to myself "Oh, it's another Zard thread." We get it, you're not happy with 5E, that's A-OKAY, feel free to play whatever edition of whatever game you want.

BTW: WOTC will pay for shipping and provide you with a replacement book if you send yours that is falling apart to them.

I do not live in the US, I have to post at my own dime IIRC. Looking into that anyway. MM cracked a few weeks ago PHB today.

Thats still something like a month or more with no 5E books for a problem that should not exist due to them cheaping out. Things are also a bit more expensive here the books are more like $70 and postage is $20 a book. That2E book cost $45 in 1995 ($31 USD)

True. Still, if you do send it back for replacement, that's a nudge to them to do things better next time so it's a strike for long-term improvement. Not saying whether or not that's worth it for you, but at least you'd be making cheaper binding a false economy for them.

I keep the binder beside my home computer for easy reference, as the binder allows the pages to lay flat, and carry the second copy with me to game sessions.

There is only an issue with the early printings of the books. They had issues in the factory. This issue was resolved as soon as they found out about it, they are offering to replace it for me. Get over it.

As long as they only printed one monster per physical page I would love that. I hated having different monsters on the front and back because you couldn't properly alphabetize later additions. Drove me nuts.

The glue method was also used for all of 3e and 4e without issue. It's unfortunate but not always a thing: it seems to be most common with early printings.
Break in the books when you get them and reduce the chances if it happening.

Did WotC customer service say you had to pay full shipping? Not even partial reimbursement?

Not to sound snide or anything but my copy I bought in about November of 2014 is still holding together well for about two years. It seems to have been a very hit of miss thing with that early print run.
