Goodman Games Announces The First Annual Gen Con Dungeon Crawl Classics Open Tournament
April 25, 2004
Are you tough enough to survive the Crypt of the Devil-Lich? Goodman Games is pleased to announce the first annual Gen Con Dungeon Crawl Classics Open Tournament, where fans of the popular Dungeon Crawl Classics modules will have the chance to test their mettle against the ultimate dungeon crawl. Those who survive will advance to the dungeon’s lower levels, where the ultimate winners will secure treasure and fabulous real-life prizes!
Designed by a hand-picked team of seasoned dungeon-crafters, Crypt of the Devil-Lich is a special module designed just for the tournament. Crafted in tribute to the classic Tomb of Horrors, it is much more difficult – by far the most difficult Dungeon Crawl Classics module produced to date. Contestants will receive pregenerated 15th level characters, which will survive only with the best teamwork and tactics. A special scoring system will allow for designation of a winner if no one survives to the final encounter (or past level one, for that matter).
The tournament will be held at Gen Con Indy on August 19-22, 2004. There are 4 time slots for round one of the tournament, with room for 4 players per slot. Round one covers level one of the devil-lich’s dungeon. The two teams with the highest scores at the end of round one will advance to round two, which covers level two of the dungeon. The team with the highest score at the end of round two will advance to round three, which covers level three of the dungeon and leads to the final encounter with the devil-lich.
Prizes will be awarded based on both individual and team performance, as follows:
Grand Prize and First Place Individual Prize: Original art by Erol Otus. Mr. Otus will render an original portrait of the winner’s favorite D&D character, and the winner will receive the original art. The image will be a black-and-white image approximately 8.5" x 11", and will be reproduced for posterity in the published version of the module.
Second Place Individual Prize: Original art by Brad McDevitt from Dungeon Crawl Classics #1: Idylls of the Rat King. The winner will receive the original frontispiece image of the foreboding mine entrance that started this whole series.
First Place Team Prize: Each member of the team with the highest team score will receive a $50 gift certificate good for any Goodman Games merchandise.
Second Place Team Prize: Each member of the team with the second-highest team score will receive a $25 gift certificate good for any Goodman Games merchandise.
Registration for the tournament is conducted via the general Gen Con Indy event registration, which opens on May 7, 2004. Time slots are as follows:
Round One: There are four time slots: two on Friday at 9:00 AM, and two on Friday at 1:00 PM.
Round Two: Both round two slots are Saturday at 9:00 AM.
Round Three: The excursion to the final level begins Saturday at 3:00 PM.
Dungeon Crawl Classics adventures are among the most popular independent d20 modules on the market. Their back-to-basics style, retro art, blue maps inside the covers, and focus on pure, unadulterated dungeon-crawling have won legions of fans. Six volumes are currently available, with as many more announced or scheduled through the end of the year.
The tournament module will be released into stores as Dungeon Crawl Classics: Crypt of the Devil-Lich in winter 2004. Until then, start sharpening your sword and your wits, because you’ll need both to survive this dungeon!
