1st level Starting Adventures - Which is the Best?

Crucible of Freya by Necromancer Games is also an awesome starting adventure. Plenty of stuff in there to build a whole series of adventure around after the "module" of over with, and lots of good online web enhancements/free stuff.

The Sunless Citadel is indeed a good beginning stand alone adventure. If you like involved city and pirate campaigns, I suggest the Freeport Trilogy, beginning with Death in Freepot that has a good mix of pirate hijinks, investigation, city interaction and roleplaying, underground exploration, and Cthulu-esque cult activity. This would be best for a longer campaign that lasts beyond the first few levels and so may not appeal if you want a stand-alone adventure.

I'd have to go with either Sunless Citadel or Crucible of Freya- leaing more toward Freya, simply because of the potential it has for expansion and continued play. On the other hand, any of the Challenge of Champions scenarios from Dungeon work well as a fun opening to a campaign.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned The shattered Circle. This was a great adventure because in 2nd it actually allowed for the characters to gain levels. Plus it had the "meepo-esq" character Clinker, the drunk gnome.... come on, Clinker!... aah that guy is great

Clinker! (though in my game the players much preferred calling him Klinker) That guy is the best! He's one of the major NPC/cronies in my very first campaign after running through Shattered Circle.

I highly recommend this one... it's a great dungeon crawl that doesn't ever really drag on or anything.

For truly 3rd edition....hmmm... Of Sound Mind is fantastic, but might be a little bit much for a first level party.... I'm not too sure.

If you do that, use the Wizards Amulet freebie on the necromancer page, it's an award winning starting adventure prelude for Crucible of Freya.

More free stuff on the necromancer site gives enough information for a campaign to lvl15.

I've run Sunless Citadel and it was fun.

I bought Crucible of Freya (and downloaded Wizard's Amulet), but it just wasn't right for my group, so I haven't run it yet.

Just got The Whispering Woodwind and it looks great! Can't wait to run it.

Hey, the Whispering Woodwind is great! I love the exposure it gives players to the World of Revloc, and the types of challenges within it are easily adjustable for almost any type of party. Mad props to CMG games on this one.

I absolutely loved the trundlefolk, and was disappointed when my PC's barely interacted with them... I will use them again! :)

any of the B series

B1 In Search of the Unknown
B2 Keep on the Borderlands

Let me give another nod to CMG's Whispering Woodwind. The adventure has notes in the sidebar on how to easily increase the difficulty if necessary. Even if you don't need a first level adventure, I would get this questus just for the way the NPCs are presented. If you've ever shied away from pre-published adventures because the antongonists at too one-dimensional, Whispering Woodwind may be just what you are looking for. All major NPCs have listed out their personality and goals in a clear, concise format.

Plus, I hear the editing on this product is just outstanding. :)

My favorite game-starters:

  • The Sunless Citadel (3e's iconic module) A good dungeon-romp with room for whatever kind of gaming you prefer
  • Of Sound Mind - A great adventure with lots of depth and excellent DM advice
  • NeMoren's Vault - Another Dungeon delve with depth, but decidedly old-school in feel, with some of the best handouts in the business.

There are others, but for 3e, these are, to me, the cream of the crop. Many love the Freeport series, but it never really did anything for me personally.
