I think the key is to go back to what was said way at the start. Class tell you how you do things.
If you do things by killing and using threats of killing: Assassin
If you do things by raging and using raw ability: Barbarian
If you do things by singing songs and using you many talents: Bard
If you do things by casting spells giving to you by a deity: Cleric
If you do things by summoning the magic of nature: Druid
If you do things by using weapons, armor, and years of martial training: Fighter
If you do things by using mental and physical discipline: Monk
If you do things by using knowledge honing from dealing with the wilderness and its inhabitants Ranger

If you go an encounter and 5 actions without rolling a skill check, you are most likely not a rogue. If neither of your first 2 actions are not attacks, you are probably not a fighter either.
