I mean, how different is the Basic Rules from an SRD...?
I cant really tell the difference, except the "Basic" has more explanation to walk a player thru the SRD rules ... which might be a better way to present the rules anyway.

Maybe the Basic implies more intellectual property with regard to the default setting? It is probably ok to the vet this for "neutral" setting content, besides what the SRD itself supplies.

The basic rules had the four classic classes with one sub each, five backgrounds (acolyte, sage, criminal, soldier, folk hero and noble) the classic Tokien races but two subraces for each (save human) and I think a few extra monsters and spells. It wasn't OGL though.

For a minute, WotC had really committed to the idea you could run the adventures with just the basic rules, so they ended up putting out documents with monsters and spells that were in the module but not in the Basic Rules. I think they did it for ToD and EE. Anyway, it was free rules if you didn't own the Core Rules, which is why I think they stopped right about when they realized they had a hit on their hands.

reminder that the SRD has no lore, just has the mechanics, not to mention no rules for character creation. It is emphatically not the same thing as basic rules, which need to be usable by new players.

OK, but in the future I would expect that to be on Beyond in the Free section.
