We're both pretty new to 5e, and haven't played it much yet. Life happened... He doesn't even have Tasha's. I think it's just a bit of crusty old coot of a 1/2e DM throwing a fit over 3 editions worth of accumulated changes. (He's my best friend since high school- I can say that, lol) And the modern outlook on how things should be done/ balanced, etc. I did create a party of test characters, just to try out the new mechanics, a year or so ago. Nothing seemed off kilter, the pc's are balanced against THAT set of monsters, not prior editions. it was actually kinda fun! For example, 4 standard Orcs with rolled HP, vs my party of now 4th level characters. We won, but took a LOT of damage- fighter got spanked for half his hp total, and cleric ate a pair of greataxe attacks, too. That was the random party of scouts from Forge of Fury. It won't take too many encounters like that to seriously drain a party of resources- which is the point. The BBEG isn't supposed to be a standalone- he's got minions, and layers of defense to weaken you first!
