24 4e Style : Day 2

"Coward!" Come back and fight ya big tub o' lard!"

Garrick yelled in derision as the dragon flew off. Quickly he drew a shuriken and hurled it after the beast. It thudded home sending up a spray of dragon blood but still the dragon continued flying off.

[sblock=OOC]Minor: draw shuriken. Standard: SlyFlourish vs 20: Attack 33. Hit> Damage 17.[/sblock]

The Consul's force field had held handily. The acid was completely harmless to it and the dragon didn't get a chance to attack it directly.

-''Wow. Hum. Thank you. Anyone knows how to bring that force field down, now?'' asks Consul Jorgen, shaken but coherant and unharmed. The tiefling indicated with an helpless shrug that he had no way of getting out of his saefty bubble.

As it turned out, after the death of the agent who had activated the force field, there was nothing to do but wait. Barely a minute later, the protective enchantment dissipated on its own.

-'Lucky for me that th beast had no idea we had such protection. I could swear it actually looked surprised when it saw its acid breath break on the magic defenses. I wonder why the hell it attacked. It does not strike me as a particularly sensible and common thing for a dragon to do.''

"Thank you Kendrick. Control was occupying this inn before the attack outside. Are the others safe?" replies Mirage leaving the question of his sister's wellbeing out of it for the moment. He is worried that he has not seen her yet.

-''The others? Well, there are those whose blood you are stepping in right now. See anybody you know?''

And Mirage did know some of these people. Volunteers and guards, mostly, but the speech writer and the campaign treasury secretary were amongst the deceased.

-''As you saw, there are also some who managed to hide upstairs, right above us. I don't have a head count, let's go say hi.''

Kendrick finished severing the devil's head and bagged it. He also picked up a peculiar golden necklace* that had come loose. He seemed satisfied and then headed upstairs along with Mirage. The Inn occupied a lot more room upstairs than on the first floor. The owner of the inn also owned the next two adjacent building and had linked the upper floor together to have more rooms while the ground level had been rented to various shops with no access to the floors above them. Mirage remembered that Kendrick had apparently come from one of these western rooms built above the shops.

From the eastern rooms, two guards and a handful of haggard citizens were tentatively emerging now that the fighting was over. A white haired human veteran seemed to be in charge of them. He hesitated upon seeing Kendrick but the sight of Mirage, whom he knew to be a SCU bodyguard to the consul, reassured him.

-''Good to see you, sir. Aside from my man and me, I got twenty-four survior in there. That's two soldier plus that drow lady you work with, all seriously wounded; five junior member from the campaign staff, one grievously wounded, plus a senior adviser; two waitresses and one cook, the cook is in bad shape; and finally twelve patrons who were mostly already there in their room, watching the speech from the balcony. We really need medical assistance.''

[sblock=*]Mirage's Perception (1d20+6=19)

The necklace is a simple gold chain with a medallion showing the draconic rune for the word unity. Mirage recognize that necklace as beeing identical to the one worn by Lars Kinnar, a human who works on the campaing; he's an event coordinator.

The rune itself is unremarkable; it is very popular amongst Undhil's patriots. You see it in graffi, tattoos, jewelry etc

Leyra

Leyra begins with the healing of her companions, once things have settled down a bit and while they are waiting for the force field to shut down.

OOC: Melora's Tide on Dagran; Healing Word on Nathan (25+HSV, wow!) and Bastion of Health on Garrick (10+HSV). Then take a short rest. Proceed with the healing, if possible.

Leyra 33/81 [11] [2] AP,SW, bloodied
Nathan 107/109 [11] [2] AP,SW
Garrick 69/80 [6] [2] AP,SW,SC
Mirage 26/78 [7] [2] SW,IW, bloodied
Dagran 64/119 [14] [2] AP,SW
Kern 59/90 [7] [2] AP,SW

As a rule of thumb, I allow the use of unused healing powers from the previous fight, as you are doing, but never a rinse and repeat approach (multiple consecutive short rest). Especially since in practice I am very loose with the five minutes deal. In the previous day you hardly rested at all between some fights. You just caught your breath and started running again. So as far as I am concerned, there is no real 5 minute rest. Just different encounters, with a set of ressources refreshing (only once) between them.

Beside, In the current situation there is a fairly obvious reason for a medic not to spend ten minutes sitting on her hands... Read the previous post, especially the
last lines.

You forgot to decrease the HS but otherwise I am copying this for ease of use for the next fight.

As soon as the force field is down, Jorgen moves down from the pyramid.

-''We need to do some damage control soon. It seems like this dragon was on an assassination mission. It's hard to interpret it otherwise. And whenever you talk about using chromatic dragons for political or military objectives, people think of the empire of Kerr. That's going to be the natural assumption of everyone who hears this. No other group has the allegiance of a larger quantity of those beasts. This is going to play right in the hands of Tribune Nara Silverfox. She already has provisions in her program to round up anyone afiliated with Bane's church. We need to learn as much as possible about this attack, and we need it by yesterday. Too bad you couldn't kill or capture the beast. I expect Control has already sent orders to our own dragons to intercept the Gray. Go over your SCU files, see if you can identify the dragon.'' Jorgen says decisevely.

Well, that is akward. He obviously doesn't realize that the Campaign HQ has been attacked and that you have been out of touch with Control since then.

[sblock=Everyone]You will have to be a little pro-active here. Ask questions, take decisions, you are by far the highest ranking SCU officials on site and whatever personnel left around (City guards rushing on site, guards back at the Campagn HQ etc.) will be looking to you for leadership.

There are a few loose ends and possible course of actions here and the plot isn't a railroad. Obviously this isn't suppoosed to turn into an Agatha Christie novel, we want to fight! But where and why the next fight occurs is a bit open at the moment.[/sblock]

"Alright, we need to get things under control in here and get Control set back up. Hopefully she is okay. Things fell apart when the dragon attacked outside, so we need a sitrep on the Consul immediately." replies Mirage.

ooc: are the comlinks working between us still?

"Make sure everyone that is alive still remains that way till the first aid teams can arrive. I need to check outside but I'll be right back. Its Mirage by the way." he says before heading for the front door.

As Nathan leads the Tribune to safety. "So, Tribune Silverfox would win in this assassination attempt, successful or not. But if I was Bane's church, I would go try to kill the most extremist. And if Kerr have become a so large empire, it is not by doing mistakes.

And what happen to the control, where is Mirage?"

Kern curses at the dragon, dusts off his wounds with a little spit and polish, then turns his attention elsewhere.

OOC: Spend 1 HS. 81/90hp.

Coming up behind Nathan, the hooded man fingers something underneath his cloak. You jump at shadows. We know nothing yet. Just as likely Silverfox is playing you all for dupes. Don't leap before you look. He scans the scurrying crowd, then turns to the north. Mirage went to the inn. We should follow. Bring the Consul for security sake. True to word, he sets off north.

OOC: Perception/Insight to see if anyone is looking at the scene that seems particularly interested or "disappointed" at the outcome.

Nathan nods at Kern "I'm brainstorming for the moment" precise the swordmage. Nathan follow Kern, walking at the side of the Tribune to cover him from further attack from one side. "It might also be Kerr, but it is less likely at first sight. Outside Silverfox clan and Kerr, who else might be in this play? Tribune Jorgen, do you have any politics that go against some organisation?"

Crytal network : Each crystal is attuned to its owner and to the other crystals in its network. As a result, you can still talk to each other though it but are cut off from the greater SCU communication network as long as Shayla is down.

Obviously, SCU is gonna notice soon enough that a whole cell is off -line, either because Shayla doesn't come in with a regular check or simply because, you know, a dragon attacked in front of thousands of witness and that kind of news spread fast.

They'll send other agents but there are no helicopters in D&D and freeform teleportation isn't what it used to be...

But there is a network of linked portal that will allow some SCU agents to poke in to see what the hell is going on in 10 minutes (It's a ritual) + how long it takes them at the central HQ to realize there is something wrong and scramble a team to investigate.

PS : Your personal crystals lack power; on their own they only have about a 100 yard radius. Shayla used a much more powerful one that allowed her to relay the communications over a larger area.

Kern's Perception (1d20+11=12)

You notice nothing amiss.

Th consul is shocked when he realizes that the campaign HQ has been attacked. He knows personnally most of the deceased.

-''We... We must discover who is behind this. There is not a minute to waste.''

[sblock]
See this as a very loose skill challenge with many possible outcome.

Not everything is a skill; simply looking for the right thing or asking for the right question is going to be enough for many elements of the investigation.

I know you don't have a lot of info (though some clues are already apparent), but that's kinda the point; You are a mere minute after an assault from a dragon and devils; no one is thinking straight. Some pretty elementary things have to be done and verified and it's up to your agents to do it.

Don't hesistate to split up if necessary.

The objective obviously is to discover who is behind the attack and why and hopefully pick their trail.

Failure in this case is penalized by wasted time. If you don't figure out what is going on on your own, the teams sent to investigate in 20 or so minutes will pick up the trail and feed you the answers but let's not embarass yourself, eh?

Over the crystal network Mirage updates the others, "The inn has been pacified, several devils were taking out our command centre while the dragon distracted everyone very publicly. A former agent/freelancer named Kendrik is here. He and I took care of all of the devils. Many are dead and some are missing I think. As long as the consul is not afraid of a little blood its pretty safe in here now. Bring him in."

He then looks up at Kendrik and the guard who gave the report, "The Consul is coming in now. We need to find out what happened and fast. I need to organize command first. Guardsman, whats your name?" Through everything there was one person he was sure was missing, where was his sister!

ooc: I am correct in assuming that none of the bodies or wounded you've listed so far included Mirage's sister right?
