I'm sad to say this -- and trust me, I'm a huge fan of the show (HUGE) -- I think the writers need some fresh ideas. Or perhaps the show needs new writers?

Yeah this season has been pretty slow and basically a rehash and mishmash of things that have happened in previous seasons. I thought the show started off very strong this year, but at some point I think they lost focus.

First off I'll say this, the executive producers know and agree with you, I read a something recently where one of them commented on the problems with this season and the need to address them for next seasons, so I don't foresee it being like this next season.

I've commented before on the feeling that they need to do something drastic, but neither of those ideas will happen (ending the show or killing Jack), so I think what they should do is go with a change of scale.

Over the course of the series they gotten bigger and bigger with their threats, at least for the most part, so I think going small scale for next season would be a good idea.

For example, I was hoping this season would be about Jack escaping from the Chinese.

I really hate rants like this, this is exactly how seasons four and five were made and they were well received (goods ratings and response from critics), season five even one the Emmy for best drama, so obviously it's not the kick to the viewers parts this fool claims.

The current season however does show what can go wrong with this method.

From Dave Berry's "24" blog:

Uh, what? You're running a complex serial drama -- albeit one that often makes no sense (which certainly makes sense now) -- and you're admitting that nobody knows where the story is going? Unbelievable. And yet, not. This kind of disdain for the viewer, which came back to bite "24" in the butt this year as viewers revolted and ratings dropped, should not be forgiven. All promises of fixing the format next year should fall on deaf ears. The producers have admitted that they're not flying the plane and that they don't know where it's going, which is a dereliction of duty. Someone at Fox should be fired for not keeping better watch on one of the network's most popular shows.

Maybe its the competing against heroes, but 24 this season has really degraded to me. There seems to be 3 different terrorist problems happening, which isn't 24 but 3 eight hours. It feels like they are making it up as they go along and the season doesn't feel as cohesive as previous years.

BTW , When I first saw that boy early this season, I thought he was jack's son. My and my fiance call him baby Jack. He needs to activate his dormant bauer gene.

I agree. I think for a show like Lost, throwing lots of threads out there over the course of 3 seasons, not having things laid out and definite hurts. 24, I think, can get away with short-term planning; cool surprises can develop (as we saw last year).

But now I think the tables have turned; they're competing with Heroes, instead of the other way around. In order to do that they need to tighten things up. We've seen a lot of these plots before in the show. Now we need something new.

I like this show and don't plan to desert it. But when 9 o'clock rolls around, I'm tuned to NBC and have a tape for 24 set in the other room. Now there's another really strong show in the 9 o'clock spot. If they want my "Now" time, they're going to have to work a bit harder.

I think the problem is that they reached a point where can't do anything new without abandoning the government-agent / law-enforcement genre or without leaving the realtime format.
