28 Days Later... (non-spoiler review, and then subsequently a lot of spoilers)

Yikes ! I hate huge plot holes in movies, im usually pretty forgiving with movies though.

I really hate when they use military personel and have them make constant dumb mistakes.

DWARF...

...were there any zombie/horror films you did like?

I agree with a lot of your points --particularly how unbelievable the ending got, with nearly-naked Jim outsurviving the military unit. And some of your point are silly. Its the end of the world, everywhere is overrun with monsters, yes, I'd grab the rum and chocolates too. This wasn't a film about robots fleeing zombies; they're humans beings, terrified, sometimes they'll do the clever thing and sometimes they'll do the idiotic thing and survive by pure dumb luck.

The points is, horror films aren't supposed to rigorously logical. They function more like nightmares. And they terrify most people exactly because, in the end, we're all still full of irrational fears. In fact, having a zombie film {or any other kind of horror} where completely rational, logical characters defeat the monsters would defeat the purpose. This whole genre is as much about our weaknesses and fears as it is about our pluck and will to survive.

Well, it seems to be getting critical raves. A quick glance at rottentomatoes.com tells me that it's a must-see.

Its a very good little film. Its not revolutionary, just a work of modest ambition and obvious craftsmanship.

I thought it was alright. Nothing new, or exciting. Bascially Omega Man or Night of the Comet.

Plus the characters do a lot of stupid things. A lot of times.

Definite thumbs down. First off any movie that just blasts you with sound to elicite a jump is weak. And they do that A LOT. Silence, silence, silence, LOUD NOISE! Ha, we're so clever!

Second, it cannot be expressed how unbelievably stupid the characters are. Tense situations caused by UTTER STUPIDITY (the tunnel anyone?) are NOT TENSE. They are stupid, contrived and make you want to see the characters die.

Did I mention how unbelievably STUPID the characters were? Zombies infect you with their blood. They like to projectile vomit their blood straight at you. So let's tie one up inside our impregnable fortress and then introduce it to any guests that stop by. One drop from its blood or spittle and its all over, but the commanding officer gets so close to it he has to recoil when it grabs for him. Good lord.

I thought with the documentary digital filmmaking approach they were really going for an immersive experience. Nope. Just cheap noise squares and ridiculously stupid characters.

Since we are spoiling it now

The whole tunnel thing.

The say "Should we go around or through it?" then they vote to go through it. WHY!?!?!?!?!?! There was absolutly no reason not to go around, none.

Why does EVERYBODY in these type movies have to go off an explore, alone.

When there is a whole city of dead people, we will take only 1 beat up old car, never mind the 100 perfectly good cars lying around. 2 would have been better.

Just as side note- While watching it we noticed none of the people had guns, well the military did. If they had been in America every single survivor would have been armed to the teeth. Nothing to start a debate about, just mentioning it.

Horror films I *DID* like? The list is short, but yes, I do think it can be done.

ALIENS - No contest, aside from the money grubbing corporate guy that tries to screw them, they generally made smart decisions.

Night of the Living Dead - I think that's what it's called, been a while. It's the one with the redhead who played the telepath Lita on Babylon 5. Some people made stupid mistakes... then they died. The smart and armed ones survived.

And as for the "their just people, they'd go for the scotch and choclate" angle, is it just me and my friends that entertain a fairly Nietzschean/Darwinian mindset at times? I mean, we constantly go over best plans in given situations, go over tactics and choices given many apocalyptic situations. It's probably caused by the same thing that makes mee watch fight club every few months...

What did I find stupid? Okay, I'll try and keep it as spoiler free as possible...

but be warned ***SPOILERS BELOW***

10) Hey, I'm a chemist.... which somehow means I'm also a pharmacist, so I have tons of drugs with me. Plus, I also happen to know how to properly remove a bullet from the lower abdomen and then stitch and dress the wound, without ANY chance of bleeding from the omentum.... or the iliac arteries.... or the aorta..... etc, etc.

For some reason, British people called pharmacists "Chemists", so he might really have been a pharmacist to begin with. (Or perhaps the person who adapted the movie didn't know that...)

Fiddle dee dee. I thought it was pretty damn good, myself. It kept me entertained for a couple of hours, and it had some tense and/or scary parts. Yeah, some dumb choices were made, but I'll chalk that up to the characters being trapped in a country overrun with crazy-ass sprinting zombies. You probably don't do your best thinking in that situation. Maybe there would have been a lot of backtracking and going out of the way if they didn't use the tunnel, and gas was a concern. I dunno. It does require a little suspension of disbelief, but that should be expected in a movie about a zombie plague.
