i think i understand why elfs have bonus to attack with bow.

but why do they have bonus with short and long sword? what would be the reason?

the same way i think that elfs get att bonus with bow, why the dwarf dont get attack bonus (racial, as elf with bow and short/long sword) with axe?

The stated reason, IIRC, is that they train with said weapons from an early age. Being that old has got to be good for something. Dwarves, conversely, train against certain enemies (as opposed to certain weapons), so they get a slew of bonuses vs. humanoids and giants. Keep in mind, the "dwarf with axe" thing isn't actually part of their background, dwarves are as likely to use swords instead of axes as any other race - they're not all Gimli.

the fact that i indeed have read the book, doesnt make less strange..

as many of you, i have read the book before the lotr movie, so dont come with "dwarf with axe=gimli", please.

its just that my old d&d books and some ad&d books that i own have dwarfs with axe.

on the other hand, i just saw that d&d comercial, with cartoon animation, and the dwarf is very "The Hobbit" like :)

Actually, if you check out the AD&D 1E dwarf entry:

Sword & light crossbow 15%
Sword & pole arm 10%
Sword & spear 20%
Axe & heavy crossbow 10%
Axe & hammer 25%
Axe & mace 10%
Hammer & pick 10%

So it's really an even split between swords & axes (45% each). Or go further back to the OD&D dwarf entry:

For every level of fighting ability there will be a 10% chance that the dwarf will have a magic shield, magic armor, or a magic sword (die 1-4) or hammer (die 5,6).

No axes at all!

thanks for all replys, i see the point now.

looks like im the only one that imagine dwaf with axes as the first thing in mind....maybe its because my orcs are always green!

Nah, it's because Dwarves are barbaric Viking Norsemen who were often depicted as wielding battle axes.

At least, they are in MY campaigns.

They're pirates, too.

Yar.
