2nd level mage armor

Just like to point out that this thread is a necro from 2002.

Since then, the "official" version of improved mage armor is a 3rd level spell which gives a +6 bonus. It has a 50gp material component, too...

I've never seen a wizard or sorc use that spell, so I guess it's probably underpowered. By the time you can burn a 3rd level slot for +2 AC, bracers of armor are relatively cheap.

I don't see the material component (at least, not in the Spell Compendium version).

And as for Bracers of Armor?

Bracers of Armor +6 market at 36k. That's enough for, say, a Cloak of Charisma/Headband of Intellect +6... which, incidentally, gives you an extra 3rd level spell slot in most cases (and in the cases where it doesn't, it gives you lots of higher level spell slots). Now, if you've already got the +6 Headband/+6 Cloak, then you're looking for some other booster - a 3rd level Pearl of Power, if nothing else, costs only 9k. You can get that, and a 5th level Pearl of Power (25k) for a little under the cost of the Bracers of Armor that duplicate the Spell Compendium's Greater Mage Armor.

Or if your DM will allow it, a +1 twillight mithral chainshirt costs just 5100gp (assuming you don't really care about incorporeal touch AC). :)

It had a material component (a small platinum shield worth 50?gp) in Complete Arcane. It makes sense that they removed it.

It's not the price of Bracers +6 that matter, but the price of Bracers +7. :)

Ah, there it is = 25gp platinum shield. Complete Arcane seems to have been the original.

Heh, there is that. Of course, when +1 AC costs you 49k, and +2 costs you 64k, you're looking at other methods first.
