3.0 Class Question

All right, this just popped in my head :

In vanilla 3.0, Paladins and Monks stop advancing when they multiclass. You can go in, but you can't come out.

Except there are certain PrCs which allow a Paladin or Monk to continue advancing (Red Avenger, for instance).

So, I have a Monk. He advances. Decides to chuck it all and just lay the smack-down using sword and board. Then he switches into Red Avenger.
Now, after Monk X/Fighter Y/Red Avenger 1, can his next level be Monk X+1?

Nope, sorry. Once the monk has multiclassed into something other than monk or a suitably-monk-compatible prestige class, he or she can no longer progress as a monk, even if he takes up a prestige class like Red Avenger later on. PrCs like that only allow the monk to gain levels in them specifically without losing access to their ability to progress further as a monk. They don't renew the character's ability to progress as a monk, as he or she has already strayed from the path and lost their way to monkish spiritual enlightenment and ascendance.
