[3.0] Help me houserule Analyze Dweomer

Tom Cashel

First Post
Hoped that would get your attention.

So I want to make some changes to Analyze Dweomer for my 3.0 campaign.

Right off the bat, I'm thinking casting time of 1 hour and the ability to identify up to one item per three caster levels, all else as written.

Your incredibly narrow options:

1. Give me some feedback on the above notion.
2. Show me YOUR house-ruled Analyze Dweomer spell.
3. Shout out the first vegetable that comes to mind.
4. Other

Okay they're not so narrow. Help a DM out!

TOMATO!

Wait, damn! Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? Oh, I can't do anything right.

Actually, I'd never used this spell before. You have inspired me to finally read it. Once I do, if I think of anything, I'll come back here.

It's a fruit, but that's okay. We'll just put that reply under "Other."

Here's the spell:

Analyze Dweomer
Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 8 hours
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One object or creature
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: No
The character discerns spells and magical properties present in a creature or object. One property, spell, or power is revealed each round, from lowest level (or weakest power) to highest (or strongest). For each spell or power, the character makes a caster level check (1d20 + caster level). If the result is equal to or higher than the spell's or power's caster level, the character identifies it. Otherwise, the character fails to identify that spell or power, and the character can check for the next one next round.
Analyze dweomer does not function when used on an artifact.
After the character analyzes one object or creature, the spell ends, even if its duration has not expired yet. The character must make a Fortitude save (DC 21) when the spell ends or be exhausted and unable to do anything but rest for the next 1d8 hours.
Focus: The focus must be worth at least 1,500 gp.

So...what of it?

Generally, I usually prefer a very transparent game where the players (and characters) know the powers of their items.

Here's what I did:

Identify: the spell will also inform you of the name of the item, and whether there are functions other than the most basic function (although it will not inform you what those other functions are).

Improved Identify, 3rd level. As Analyze Dweomer, but casting time 8 hours and range is Touch.

Analyze Dweomer: Casting Time is 1 action, and the caster can examine a different item each round.

I mostly have auto-identifying items, just because it keeps the party on track, and not spending half the session dealing with the market economics of buying/selling/identifying. It seems to me that a good house rule for analyze dweomer is to make it work on nonmagical items as well. In effect, it is a really high roll on a bardic lore check (the item's history, properties, and recent actions are explained). It adds a bit of flavor, and gives the spell use in mystery/suspense type adventures.

Not a very well written spell for 6th level in my opinion...

Never did like that spell for 3.0 edition. Thought it was underpowered compared to it's "6th" spell level and what you can get with the "Legend Lore" spell, in less time.

1. I like your house ruling on the spell, and would use something similar in my own campaign.

2. My house ruling for Analyze Dweomer would be as the spell in the PHB but with a casting time of 1 hour plus 10 mins per item use identified. And, Allow the caster to "Analyze" 1 Object/Creature/Material whatever !! every 2 levels. If you think about the lowly "Identify" Spell, it's one function/use etc..every single level, so effectively a 12th level catser could identify "12" items main fucntions etc...Rather powerfull compared to the currently stated "Analyze Dweomer" spell as it is in the PHB. But if you state that the spell can "Analyze" every feature/use/function of the item, in maybe only a couple of hours, as above, and they could do this several times on several items then you have a more powerfull version of the Identify spell that is appropriate for it's spell level, 6th in this case.

3. Carrot, coz I just ate some Coleslaw...Hmmm wonder why I didn't say Cabbage or Onion....interesting !!!!!

4. I think that maybe Legend Lore would have to be tweaked if we are considering altering the Analyse dweomer spell as that would now put the spell out of whack with the other divination type spells. Not sure what we could do with it though...any thoughts out there ???

Um, Legend Lore will not identify items, at least not in the same way Analyze Dwoemer would. It might give some info, but won't identify it. Analyze Dweomer should just be lowered probably to Level 3 or something. Hmmm . . . Never thought about it, as it looks like a good spell to me.

Legend Lore WILL give information on artifacts, though, so . . .

Yeah, Analyze Dweomer should probably be a Level 3.
