I have had a change of computers. Does anyone know where I could get the patch for the version 1.0 character generator CD that came with the 3.0 PHB? I can't find it on the Wizards site, nor on Code Monkey.
Yes indeed it is free. There are a few 'for pay' datasets, notably for the official D&D data, but the OGL SRD rules are there for free. (The 'official D&D' stuff includes the critters like mindflayers that were left out of the SRD, and the named versions of the spells (Bigby's Crushing Hand is called Crushing Hand in the SRD) and the renamed versions of the spells done by Creative mountain are also present (Big or Big's Crushing Hand). I use the free version myself.
The program is in Java, and to use all the features you need the latest vesion of Java, and of course Java is a wee bit slow on some machines (though faster by far than doing it by hand)
The interface is kind of awkward, but it is designed to be expandable, and people have been doing expansions for it for quite some time now. (It gets updated with fair regularity.) It can output to PDF or to HTML.
