In 3.0 all your gear merges with your new body and becomes non-functional. In Masters of the Wild is a magical item, the wilding clasp, which prevents the merging and keeps the item working.
In 3.5 the druid can choose which items merge and which not. There is somewhere a list which item slots an animal can have.
The downside is that with the 3.5 rule the wildshaped druid stands out like a sore thumb in a natural enviroment.
