[3.0] Using a higher-level spell slot

I have a third level wizard. He's got 2 first level, and 1 second level spell. He wants to memorize not 2, but three magic missles, because he's going into a fight and has no good offensive 2nd level spells. It would operate exactly as a 1st level spell, no bonus for being in a 2nd level slot.

Is this allowed? Is there documentation on it somewhere?

Can an 11th level Wizard use her 6th level spell slot to memorize an additional teleport? That kinda thing..

Yes, and yes. Page 281 of the PHB under Spell slot, but to be nice, here it is:

A spellcaster can always opt to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell, if desired.

Yes it is possible. See the PHB page 148, left column " Choosing a spell - Spell Slots"

Remeber... as you already said. A spell memorized in a higher level slot is in all regards handled like a spell of its original level. DCs, Effects, Range etc. etc. don't change. In order to change these aspects as well you would require the feat Heighten Spell.
