D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Another Druid/Wildshape/Casting Question

So for the question that's likely been asked before:

I'm converting my Druid to 3.5 and I want to make sure I have this right.

Druids now take the "animal" type when wildshaping. The Natural Spell feat lets them cast spells while in wildshape form. So Druids can now cast spells like Nature's Favor, Animal Growth, etc. that have "animal" as the target.

Am I getting all that correct? I'm doubting it, because if true, that makes an already powerful class WAY nasty. Not that I mind, of course... :)

Yes, a wildshaped Druid is a legal target for spells that affect animals.

Is this too powerful? I think it depends a lot on how your DM handles magical equipment while wildshaped.

If your DM allows you to potentially benefit from "almost all" your magical equipment while wildshaped, yes, the Druid is probably way overpowered. (A wonderful loophole for Fighters who might benefit from being Polymorphed into a Troll, BTW.)

If your DM allows you the benefit of "almost none" of your magical equipment while wildshaped, then wildshaping is too weak -- the Druid becomes a low AC/save accident waiting to happen.

I'm not sure I agree with you. Other than my wilding armor, I don't benefit from any magic items while in animal form. In 3.0, my Druid was tough. In 3.5, he'll be nasty tough! :)

Thanks for the response. That makes me happy.

Heh... I'd let the Druid do it... as he'll have to re-roll all his mental stats (3d6). He could screw himself out of ever getting back! YMMV.

Well, there's no stat requirement for Wildshape.

And his Wisdom never changes, so his primary spellcasting stat is safe.

Wildshape to dog, say. Type changes to Animal. Cast Awaken using Natural spell. Int resets to 3d6, gain 1d3 Cha, gain 2 Hit Dice, type changes to Magical Beast.

Wildshape to cat. Type changes to Animal. Cast Awaken again. Int resets, gain another 1d3 Cha (unnamed increase, so stacks), gain 2 Hit Dice, type changes to Magical Beast.

Wildshape again... until you run out of spare XP for casting Awaken.
