[3.5] Answering the Call

While not exactly swift to react or especially skilled at woodscraft, Orinar Giantsblood kept his keen eyes open, searching for any signs of danger under the dark canopy of the forest. His heritage aided him in this, allowing him to see in the dim light much better than a human would.

Lars Crichton, HP 11/11, AC 14 (t/ff 12), F+3, R+1, W+0

Lars keeps fairly alert, but is too busy watching his steps, hacking through any particularly egregious undergrowth, and thinking about the grim duty awaiting him up ahead to react very quickly when the shadow passes overhead. It takes him a moment to notice and mutter "Huh?" before he does anything.

Initiative 9, Spot 16, Survival 2
[sblock=ooc]Lars is apparently too preoccupied with the view, and too used to living in the city, for now.:-/

Spiders! (Surprise Round)

Kyl trudges along with the rest of the group. When the shadow passes overhead, he looks up quickly........ and nearly walks into a tree. While not exactly swift to react or especially skilled at woodscraft, Orinar Giantsblood kept his keen eyes open, searching for any signs of danger under the dark canopy of the forest. His heritage aided him in this, allowing him to see in the dim light much better than a human would. Menno is slow to pick up on the signs, and nearly collides with a party member before looking up, trying to discern what has startled the rest.

Distracted by the shadow passing, only Orinar spots the several small forms that burst from hiding. Four spiders, each in size about half the length of a man's arm, scuttle into view. While none of them are yet within weapon reach, they have caught the party in a rough circle. Surely, in mere seconds, they will close to attack...and to be attacked!

OOC: Okay, I sort of messed this up. Orinar gets to act in the surprise round. The spiders are about 15 feet away all around. So, Orinar gets a standard action, and then we go into normal initiative sequence. Please narrate actions and provide relevant dice rolls.

"Ware! Spiders!" cries Orinar. Having a moment before the foul little vermin close, the giantsblood calls upon his innate abilities for protection from the threat.

Orinar, round 1 actions

Orinar heeds Lars' advice, and raises his massive blade above his head to strike as he waits for the spiders to near him; the thought that his sword may well be overkill in this situation never enters his mind.

Spiders! (Round 1)

"Ware! Spiders!" cries Orinar. Having a moment before the foul little vermin close, the giantsblood calls upon his innate abilities for protection from the threat. Kyl crouched, pulling his kukri as he did. He postures himself defensively, not wanting to let the approaching spiders to get in a clean shot. Lars raises his axe a bit, looking up, but tells the others firmly "Steady now, don't panic..." He waits until a spider comes within reach, then hacks at it with his battleaxe. Orinar heeds Lars' advice, and raises his massive blade above his head to strike as he waits for the spiders to near him; the thought that his sword may well be overkill in this situation never enters his mind.

When the spider attack comes, it comes quickly. The monstrous arachnids scuttle forward, leaping to attack! Lars's and Orinar's weapons flash, and Lars's axe splits a leaping spider in two. Orinar's aim is less accurate. Likewise is Kyl's. The spider leaping at the half-giant actually skitters along the blade of Orinar's sword before getting close enough to attack. Nevertheless, Orinar jerks his hand away quick enough to avoid a bite. Kyl sidesteps another spider's attack; the foul creature lands near his feet. Menno, however, isn't so skillful or fortunate. The third spider's fangs sink into the meat of his thigh! Menno retreats, half-staggers away from the spider, words of magic pouring from his lips just before a gob of acid flies from his hands. The burning liquid strikes true. The spider twitches and squeaks, and then ceases moving.
