You may have been noticing that questions regarding DUNGEONS & DRAGONS(R) v.3.5 backward compatibility have been popping up in the roleplaying game community.

Coinciding with the July release of the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS v.3.5 core rulebooks, Wizards of the Coast will offer a free

backward-compatibility guide to enable players to use their existing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS accessory titles with the new core rulebooks. The free guide includes revision notes for the EPIC LEVEL HANDBOOK, FIEND FOLIO, MANUAL OF THE PLANES, DEITIES AND DEMIGODS, and MONSTER MANUAL II. It also contains general advice for use with any third edition D&D(R) supplement and makes upgrading to D&D v.3.5 both easy and fun. Players will be able to download the guide from www.wizards.com

The new v.3.5 core rulebooks represent the best-playing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS experience yet and, with backward compatibility, players will be able to take advantage of all that D&D v.3.5 has to offer without hesitation. Carefully designed to build on and expand players' options, v.3.5 will not make key game accessory and supplement titles obsolete.

The people over at Gaming Report also pointed out what this article did not say...that it indicated nothing of having revision notes for the Psionics Handbook. Could that be a subtle clue then of a Psionics Handbook 3.5E (especially if you remember that internet poll)?

SRD and conversion manual

Ok, so we will have both simultaneous release of new rules in the SRD with the release of D&D3e5, and a conversion manual with rules for updating existing books.

This should please many of those that were... let's say.. enthusiastically expressing negative feelings towards WotC and the way they do business.

I'm looking forward to july!

Cheers!

Nope.

It's still a money-grubbing scheme. Three years is too soon. Wait a few more years; then you can pick up D&D:The Gathering 4E.

Which just goes to show people will complain about anything.

Don't want to buy new books? Pick it all up free from the SRD.

Don't want to peruse the SRD? Get the free conversion guide.

Don't like 3.5? Stick to your 3.0 books.

I'm personally looking forward to 3.5, and I'm quite happy that WOTC is going to these lengths to make the transition easy. If they only cared about money at the expense of all else, they could just publish revisions and not worry about backwards compatibility or assisting in conversions -- let alone handing out all the new rules for free.

Well, money-grubbing is actually the way of businesses. In fact, if WotC doesn't grub enough money, there won't be any D&D at all. Given that reality, I think they're being extremely fair and considerate.

I'll concede the point

Ah, I wasn't aware of that rule. Could you point out the relevant passage in the Supreme Ruler's Handbook where it states the correct number of years between revisions? :D

Sorry, I realise that you think it's too soon. But considering the rules changes will be freely available, and a conversion booklet freely available, what else can WotC do (apart from canning the revision completely, that is)?

Cheers!

I'll second that thought. I'm getting pretty tired of people complaining about a company trying to make money. I know it's a tough concept, but that is why they are in business.

A revision every decade should be sufficient. 1E lasted for 12 years. 2E lasted for 11 years. 3E lasted for three years. 'nuff said.
