D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Bard: what enables him to assemble a team?

Easy thing is just to have skills like gather info but if you actually want something specific that other heralds might not have done how about:

undetectable alignment and disguise self. You aproach them first as the herald and get them for the job if they seem honest and worthy enough. Then later that night you show up disguised and undetectable alignmented as someone else and tell them you're send by another power in the kingdom who wants the mission to fail. You offer them large amounts of moneys if they agree to sabotage the mission. Judging on their reaction and what they say to your (regular form) herald the next day you have more info on their honour and such.

Just don't do that to the Paladin wielding a greatsword, one hit might put down a second level bard if he rolls well.

You know what else helps the Bard get the team back to his lord?

The skills and abilities of the team he assembled. Don't shy away from having others contribute to this portion of the campaign.

You know what else (else) helps?

The same things that let somebody assemble a good team in real life, where you may have noticed, there is no magic:

A good sense for people
Intuition
Interviews
Common Sense
Background Checks

No spells, feats, or out-of-character considerations required.

Honestly, it baffles me when people ask for OOC solutions to in-game problems. Glad I could help, though.

Stay in public and make sure your dying cries are "GUARDS! GUARDS!"

Alternatively, cast Grease on the bstrd and laugh. You're a bard.
