D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Changing Intelligent Weapon Alignment

Search is not working properly, so I don't know if this has been asked...

Our group has found a +3 life-drinker longsword which is intelligent. Its alignment is NE.

How could we change its alignment to LE or LN so someone from our group can use it? Wish? Craft Magic Arms and Armor? Spells that change alignment?

Hm, a life-drinker isn't based on [Evil] spells so it can potentially be neutral. (Good might be unlikely, though.)

I recommend Redeeming the item, per BoeD rules.

I can't think of anything beyond the things that have been said.

Redeeming might work, Wish should work with that, too, and then you have the option to use the Craft feat to "excise" the old personality/spirit and bind a new one to the weapon.

I would allow Wish to accomplish it, by essentially replacing the sentient psyche in the weapon with another one of a different alignment. I wouldn't allow any other option, since intelligent weapons are, IMO, like demons and devils: their alignment is hard-wired into their fundamental nature.

That LE character can use the sword without changing the alignment. If that is a NE intelligent sword, any evil character can use it. Read P.269 of DMG.

Thanks people. Looks like no easy rules solution. However, good RP opportunities.

Understood. However, we are in a Law vs. Chaos battle, so any nonlawful influence on a group member is a no-no. We had a NG intelligent sword once, and the LG wielder was a low ego fighter. So it would make him do things that the group did not approve...
