That is probably the most telling point I've seen in this argument. The spell evokes darkness, not light, and thus could not raise the local lighting.

Except that it isn't defined anywhere that spells with the Darkness descriptor cannot raise lighting levels.

The only effect defined for those descriptors is how they intereact with each other, not with any other source of light.

The reason for this change was because the original Darkness was overpowered: Anyone in the area of Darkness, since nobody could see, was forced to leave the area, or run an increasingly large risk of being eaten by a grue.

Now that the area is not totally dark, people in areas of Darkness are no longer at risk for being eaten by grues.
