[3.5] DMG cover: what is that?

On the right edge of the 3.5e DMG cover is a silver/white oval that stands out from everything else that's on there. It's not a gem, at least not to my eye.

I think it looks like a metal pull-ring that is sticking out from the surface of the cover, ready to be pulled. This would fit in with the theme, but it's not clear enough for me to be certain. What do you think it is?

(As an aside, the DMG cover totally rocks. Based solely on it's geography, the globe in the center looks like it would be a fascinating world to play in -- a perfect choice for the DMG.)

I thought it was a pull ring to open the book.

As for the globe and the eye on the MM: I think those are trackballs as 3.5 now support trackballs. ;)

boring factoid:if you really look, you can discern that the globe is indeed Oerth. You can find the Nyr Dyv, The Wild Coast, etc.

My thought was a pull-string to make the earth spin around, mabey a key to opening the tome?

If I run into Henry at GenCon, I'll ask him.
