That is a spell that was left out of third edition intentionally. The whole set up as GP as a measure of character power practically requires spells like fools gold NOT be available.

Gold qualifies as "precious Metals" I should think. At the earliest you can cast it (9th), gold, at 20 minutes/level, would last three hours. Plenty of time to skip town....
