This is a simple question really.


What is the CR of a 6th level Orc Warrior?
Is it:
a.) "6, +1 per level"
b.) "5, because the first level of warrior is only worth 1/2 CR, or they can trade in their 1 HD for a level of warrior"
c.) "3, because all NPC classes only add +1/2 CR per level"


Next simple question.

What is the CR of an Ogre with 6 levels of Warrior?

a.) "9. CR 3 +6 levels"

b.) "8. CR 3, +6 levels, but either the first level is only 1/2, or they can trade in one hit die for the first level"

c.) "7. According to the Improving Monsters section, all nonassociated classes add +1/2 CR per level, until the monster has as many levels as HD. After that they become associated & add +1 per level. An ogre has 4 HD, so the first four levels are +2, then the next two levels count as +1 CR each, for a total of +4. CR 3 + 4 = 7"

d.) "6. According to the Impoving Monsters section. All NPC classes are always treated as nonassociated, no matter what. So no matter how many Warrior levels you add, they're always +1/2 CR per level. 6 * 1/2 = +3 CR. 3+3 = 6."

For the 1st one I'd say b), the first level of Warrior is just 1/2 CR and they must trade. As for a) warrior levels never were +1 to CR/level. As for c), +1/2 levels is not enough (20th level warrior = 10th level fighter).
For the 2nd: c), NPC classes are nonassociated, even if it increases the existing strengths of a monster. Regarding d), it does not seem to make a lot of sens to keep NPC classes nonassociated even when you add more levels than there are HD (20th level oger warrior = 10 level ogre fighter). As for a) warrior levels never were +1 to CR/level. And b), since they have 3 hit die and are not humanoids, they certainly can't trade their first HD.
That's what I think anyway.

See pages 37-38 in the DMG.

A NPC class still is calculated as CR=level-1. So the Orc war6 is CR5. You jsut do it like a character.

The Ogre is CR 7 as per your reasoning (c).
