[3.5] Observations (now I hold the books!)

Plane Sailing

Astral Admin - Mwahahaha!
Well, I've just picked up my copies of the three books

I've not got the chance to look through in detail yet because I'm still at work for another three hours, but I had a quick flip through the PHB to see if there was any details that stands out which I'd not seen mentioned.

1. I don't think I'd noticed this before, but the Ranger has lost "polymorph" from his 4th level spell list. Presumably even with the reduction of effect in the polymorph spell this was considered to make him too effective as a fighter! Summon Nature IV can produce a medium elemental now though, which is better than before (used to be Summon V only)

2. Protection from Evil clarifies it's protective effect slightly (enchantment/charms and enchantment/compulsions with an element of continuing control). Where does this leave power word stun/blind I wonder? More detailed reading is probably necessary!

3. The lines behind the text seem even more pronounced this time round, I really think it hurts legibility.

4. Losing Endure Elements as a DR vs energy spell is a big hit IMO and I don't think I'll be using that when I convert. The old version allows some risks in very hot/very cold conditions (the 1d6 might come up a 6) while also providing a practical benefit to the caster. It has been a vital part of my sorcerers armoury and flavour since her very beginning, and most of the things that she did back then would have been impossible without endure elements (e.g. using burning hands to set the grasslands alight and then hiding amidst the burning flames).

5. Thank goodness they have the lesser/standard/greater versions of spells together now! So much easier to look things up.

6. It is a shame that the opportunity wasn't taken to replace some of the worst elements of the original artwork - for instance, the race lineup which bears no resemblance to the actual ability modifiers which the races have, and the weapons pictures which include some really strange images.

Anyhow, that's what struck me on my first glance through, just picking up things which reflect on characters I have or DM for.

I'll write more later, as I get reading.

Cheers

I'll probably house rule some of this. I'll let Endure Elements offer energy resistance 1, in addition to other things.

What sort of situations would you use Endure Elements (Sonic, Acid, Electricity) in?

Well, in a recent episode of the campaign we saw an NPC recieve a nasty electric shock from a small metal creature - so my sorcerer cast endure elements (electricity), drew her frying pan and waded in.

The new version doesn't give any protection against sonic/acid/electrical damage *at all*. It doesn't give DR against fire or cold, it just allows you to ignore the penalties of temperature within the -40 to 120 degrees farenhite (figures taken from memory here) - don't quote me on those!).

Essentially it is apparently immunity to frostbite, heatstroke and sundry other mundane temperature-related threats.

Cheers,

How do they handle that, do they do:

Magic Weapon

Magic Weapon, Greater

Magic weapon, Lesser

In the alphabetical listing of spells? How about in the short spell lists?

Do they do full text of spells as in the srd or still use the short form as x but change y?

What about the illusion chains?

Thanks

Yep, that's the way they list them ni the alphabetical listing of spells. They still use the short form of "as x but change y", but at least it is all on the same page now!

As a nice touch they also have entries for "Greater", "Mass" etc which list the spells with those prefixes and explains how to look them up. A good touch, I think.

I've not got the book with me at work today, so I'll try to check up the illusion chains when I get home.

Cheers
