Usually they are required to tithe, or donate a percentage of their wealth to the church. But he's welcome to keep anything above that.

Actually, while many people include such rules in their campaigns, it's a campaign/Church-specific thing. It's no longer part of the class as written, the way it used to be in older editions.

I think it might be a common houserule, which is why he said "usually."

This being the Rules Forum, Mouseferatu's comment is very important. 3.x does not require paladins to tithe in any way, shape, or form. And a good thing too, since magical gear is so significant a part of character power in the 3.x paradigm.
