U can House rule that ring will takes effect only when wielder is less than 60 ft high.. and is falling ...:D

Ha. That would have been handy early on in my campaign.

The sorcerer-bandit's ambush had gone sour, and the monk had climbed the cliff face and was bearing down on him fast.

But fortunately, he was right beside a deep canyon. He just leaped off, confident the PCs couldn't follow him. His Ring of Feather Fall kicked in straight away, so he was in no danger from the fall.

And as he drifted slowly down at 60 feet per round, the ranger and the elf with their 110'-range-increment composite longbows moved to the edge of the canyon and started using Rapid Shot...

He'd have been better off taking his chances with the four-hundred-foot fall...

:D Someone should tell him that you can take rings off.

Good tactic in this situation: "I take my ring off, and then ready an action to put it back on when I'm about thirty or forty feet above the ground."

Not much help when you're unconscious after the first round.

I think by the time he got out of practical range, he was at about -40... :)
