D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Share spells? How does this work?

Simplicity

Okay, so in 3.5 you can share spells with a familiar or animal companion as long as you stay within 5 ft of each other.
Ummm... but D&D is turn-based. So, if you move your character, you are now more than 5 ft from your familiar/companion and
the share spell ends? Even though the familiar/companion would move right up next to you on its initiative?

How can you reconcile turn-based movement and the need to stay within 5 ft of each other?

Two simple solutions for this... Either have the character and animal companion use the same initative, or check to see distance at the end of the turn, after everyone's had a chance to go. The second option is probably the best, IMO.

My group plays it that Familiars/Animal Companions/Mounts go on the player's move rather than their own initiative unless specifically stated by the controlling player when inititive is rolled.

Let that familiar sit on your shoulder (or look out of a pocket of your robe). This way, you avoid problems, and it looks badass (or cute) :D

Or, if the familiar is only near you, not on you, let him mirror your moves. This should be OK with your DM.
