D&D 3.x 3.5 Whip feats?

We're doing 3.5, so in order to get Improved Disarm, you have to have Combat Expertise.
I was responding to bobhayes, who suggested Combat Reflexes--that's what I was naysaying. Obviously, you need Combat Expertise to qualify for both Improved Trip and Improved Disarm, both very handy feats for a whip-wielder. (And Combat Expertise is actually pretty underrated itself, for that matter.)

Veven1290's and Dandu's suggestion of the pyrokineticist PrC sounds pretty cool. You'd also have to take at least one level in a psionic class (psychic warrior, I suppose) or play a psionic race to qualify. Plus, you have to have set a building on fire just for the fun of watching it burn. But who hasn't done that?

"I learned something today."

Hadn't realized whips were so nerfed. Never mind!

(Switch to Spiked Chain and THEN follow my advice, that's my [revised] advice!)

EN Publishing has a PDF called something like "EN Arsenal: Whips." I've only glanced it over, so I can't exactly say I recommend it, but it's a PDF ... whaddaya got to lose?

There aren't really any feats for whips, in general 3E underutilized them, I think they just got the crappy whip climber skill trick. So best bet is to look into tripping and disarm stuff. My friend had a short lived whip build using a Whip-dagger (in arms and equipment guide, possibly was updated for 3.5, get it if you can). He went for a trip build with the Curling Wave Strike feat from Stormwrack, which lets you forgoe the extra attack from improved trip to instead trip someone else. He also was going for heavy investment in the Setting Sun discipline from Tome of Battle. It includes a LOT of techniques to throw an enemy for damage (and strategic positioning) based off of the tripping rules. Since a whip is a tripping weapon (so it should work with the maneuvers) you get a lot of extra reach to use those throws with. Could be a good build for you, just going Swordsage and either picking up whip proficiency via feat or dip into the Bard class.

Thank you! I couldn't find the entry for the Mighty Whip, but we knew there was a write-up for one. Also, I'll look up that PDF, thank you!

Honestly, thank you everyone!

I wrote E.N. Publishing's Whips book, and while in hindsight some of the mechanics could have been cleaned up, there's plenty in there to make whips solid and useful.

If you want to go for more of a utility back-up weapon, there's plenty of options for that. There are feats to build agile hit-and-run whip-wielders, or close-combat grapplers (whip someone, drag them in, and stab them while they're pinned).

There's even a prestige class for people who just like weird janky weapons, that gives you bonuses for throwing alchemical items and tripping people -- y'know, for the folks who like to play gnomes and don't care if they ever actually kill something, as long as they can be disruptive.

If you want to go hardcore whip fighter, there's the whipsword, which lets you make Ivy from Soul Calibur:

Lasher Prc from Sword and Fist (3.0 but the PRC was not updated so, meh.)
Fun fact. Rules as Written, anything that wasn't converted from 3.0 to 3.5 is still legal under the 3.5 system. So unless Lasher has mechanics which are defunct, it is still a viable class choice in 3.5 !

Being able to do anything requiring manual dexterity with a whip instead is neat, there's a skill trick to use a whip like a grappling hook, and you can get a magic whip which ignores the non-lethal, can't damage through armor restrictions.

So, get spiked gauntlets and whips are boss.

I allowed a player to use the prestige class in my 3.5 campaign. Now, at the end of the campaign the character is still alive, making him the longest surviving group member. He's one encounter short of advancing to 16th level and took all levels in the prestige class.

He managed to overshadow all other non-spellcasters and regularly kills enemies in a single turn. So, yes, you can allow it in your game, but looking at this character I realize why the prestige class was never updated!
