Isn't there a Goliath Hammer somewhere? Races of Stone seems like the book it'd be in but I don't have the books handy right now.

Those videos on the three section staff make me want to run a monk with one... unfortunately without selling the group on ruling it a reach weapon it'd be kinda boned. I really don't like any monk weapons since their own fist progress in damage capability so fast.

...and on the topic of how it is vs. how it should be; I argued (and lost) that once a person was flanked, any other opponent who joins melee against them should get the flanked bonuses too. If I've got a guy in front and behind me (flanked, lose Dex to AC, they receive +2 attack bonus), I wouldn't be able to defend against a third guy coming up from my left side any easier since my attention is already split.
...As pointed out to me though this is probably more for balance, otherwise it'd be really easy to swarm a monster and beat it down... still, I don't like it when I think of it logically.

Well, in Eberron, PHB2 and DCv1, there are feats that let a Monk treat other weapons as monk weapons. And you know what, a Monk with a Greatspear and the Combat Reflexes feat tree can do some mighty nasty stuff well before his unarmed strike gets the same base damage as the weapon.

And, its reach aside, a decent weapon is a good thing to have when you consider how many creatures can hurt you if you touch them.

Good points. I've never put a Monk build together though so haven't really looked through feats for them - oddly enough though I have been toying with the idea of a Fighter with a Greatspear and the Short Haft feat... may need to re-look at that using a Monk though!

As a monk-o-phile, I still have to admit the Ftr (or a PsyWar) build will probably be better- the feats, the BAB, the HP...

But the Monk will be cooler.

I think in the FR campaign setting there is an order of monks that can multiclass freely between Monk and Fighter - that may work to be able to dip Fighter for 2-4 levels.
