I really don't like any monk weapons since their own fist progress in damage capability so fast.
Well, in Eberron, PHB2 and DCv1, there are feats that let a Monk treat other weapons as monk weapons. And you know what, a Monk with a Greatspear and the Combat Reflexes feat tree can do some mighty nasty stuff well before his unarmed strike gets the same base damage as the weapon.
And, its reach aside, a decent weapon is a good thing to have when you consider how many creatures can hurt you if you touch them.
As a monk-o-phile, I still have to admit the Ftr (or a PsyWar) build will probably be better- the feats, the BAB, the HP...
But the Monk will be cooler.
