[3.5E] Is it just me or...

is the new art for the revised D&D PHB, DMG, and MM really, really cool. Case in point, the blink dog image from the latest Revision Spotlight (attached below).

The artwork in the original versions seemed ok to me but never really grabbed my attention overall like the new art does. The Blackguard image was spectacular, IMO, as well as all the rest of the art that has been released for the Internet community.

So the question is... do you agree or disage? Does the new art rock or does it bite in your opinion?

I think over time (with a few blips here and there) D&D artwork has steadily improved.

But yes, the stuff I've been seeing for 3.5 is looking good.

Agreed Knightfall1972. The original art in the 3E books didn't do a dang thing for me- in many cases I thought it hurt. I do like much of the new stuff I have been seeing in the 3E spotlight columns. Hopefully they will continue with this trend and phase out more of the original dungeonpunk style art for newer, more technically sound art.

The picture of the Blink Dog that you posted was done by Wayne Reynolds. I hate his artwork with a passion. Give me a real painting by Elmore, Easley, Caldwell, or Brom . . . not this cartoon hack crap.

[I'm sure Wayne is a great guy, and I have nothing against him personally. I just don't like his style.]

I love the new art. Wayne Reynolds, for example, is one of my all-time favorite D&D artists, right up there with Erol Otus, Jim Holloway, Sam Wood, and Todd Lockwood. Reynolds' art has a vitality to it, a sense of motion, a feeling of adventure caught in a strobe light. Very very fitting for D&D, perfectly capturing the feel of the game. That's been true of most of the art we've seen for 3.5 thus far.

I have to agree. The new artwork looks great and I personally fin Wayne Reynolds work among the best on WotC books.

I was so happy when I saw the new blackguard pic. It's ok, not as cool as the Blink Dog but man....the old Blackguard sucked SOOOOOO much.
